996 What To Do With A Rs Engine

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by sandking11, May 5, 2024.

  1. just picked uo a track bike for some of the parts for my own 748.

it's a 996. or was meant to be.

First I noticed the cases looked sandcast and unpainted.
then I saw the exhaust was massive and the lower exhaust pipe runs on the right. not in the middle or left.

on the the left of the bike is a bolt on deep sump in aluminium

    the ecu is a p8

there's no engine number. its totally blank.

do i have a RS engine?

the bike ticks over ok but barely runs till it shows 4000 rpm.

it builds rpm like a well jetted 2 stroke. absolutely instant!

Once it's over 4000 rpm it runs well till 7k then goes bonkers. 'G' cams maybe?

will post pics later see if anyone can confirm

  2. Sounds very interesting. Let's see some photos. Open a cam cover and find out what is stamped on the camshafts

  3. Quite possibly, need to see pictures. Andy

  4. here she is.
    throttle bodies are stock.

the deep sump is part of the case. it doesn't bolt on.

how do I check what cam is in it?

  5. Looks like magnesium wheels too.
Adaptors to convert the 40mm billet brakes onto 65mm Ohlins fork bottoms appear interesting.

  6. the wheels are from a ducati monster s2r I believe.
there is a set of magnesium wheels with it too.

when I collected it I was struggling to lift the seat unit up as it was catching but saw the p8 subframe mounting posts so assumed it was a p8.

    now it's lifted I see its a 1.6m on a mounting plate to a p8 subframe lol

  7. That being the case, could be a 748RS. Can you post a picture of the belt side of the engine ? Andy

  8. The clutch housing is machined out normally on the rs engines

  9. it's not a very good pic I'm afraid. my new workshop isn't finished so the lighting is currently rubbish

  10. Mmmm, both the 748RS engines I have/had didn't have belt covers. What do the throttle bodies look like ? Andy

  11. Milled or no flywheel can always explain horrendous tick over and 2-stroke type delivery

  12. I have a stock 996 sat here and a 996 engine sat on the bench.

comparing them they look identical to this one.

there's A47 scribed into the crankcase.

there's no markings on the cylinder head except for some felt tip valve clearance markings.

my other 996 have a C stamped into the top of cylinder head

  13. there's no open clutch cover like on the factory Rs bikes. wondering if this was simply a budget thing? maybe more privateer option?

the throttle cable set up is different too. it feels very light compared to my other ones. it may just be the cables in better condition!

  14. Unless it has specific provenance it looks like a bitsa track bike.

Doesn’t help that ducati in the past (this era) thru whatever was in the parts bin on whatever bike was in front of them!

  15. it's 100 percent a bitsa for sure

i wondered whether the motor is a genuine Rs or not.

  16. I purchased a job lot of oil filters a while back and a few were for 916RS and I subsequently found out that the RS does not have an oil pressure relief valve and only this filter is suitable for it. Lucky as I was going to use it on my then 748.

  17. RS has wider cam belt, top section of radiator has extra thickness and fewer hoses, ECU is in the front cowl, electrical connectors are military style cylindrical, seat is fastened by two dzus on the top, gear lever is multiple parts for QS, two shower injectors per cylinder, R clip in rear spindle, different footpeg brackets, cutaway in seat for Termis…….

  18. I've got the quickshifter and rearsets.

I'm aware the chassis isn't Rs it's more regarding the motor.

managed to peak into the rear cylinder. 431 cams.

seems the motor is bits of Rs.

now what to do with it. I've got a 1098 engine I was going to fit to my 748 but now I'm thinking of putting this in.

    any thoughts?

  19. Put it on a dyno. If it is less than 130 hp fit the 1098.
