748 Advice On Buying 748r Please

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by steve 748r, Nov 22, 2014.

  1. Evening all. Going to see a 748r in the morning and i have a few questions. I dare say it has been done to death already but here goes. The bike is an early 2000 with the showa suspension.
The things i need to look for to make sure its a genuine r model are Oil cooler , gold forks, wider belts ( anyone know the width ) and thats were my knowledge ends. The bike has only done 8000 miles and looks immaculate. Apparently the service book was lost by a previous owner and replaced but now only has the last service stamp. I think i will have to assume the history is incomplete. Does the r motor still suffer from flaking rockers ? And one last thing, with it being a non plaque model does that mean it wont have a limited edition number ? Thanks for reading this guys and hopefully you can help me .

    Steve.

  2. Best way is to lift the tank and make sure it has shower injectors.
Also I believe there' a bird at Ducati you can send the bikes details to and she'll confirm the bikes heritage for you.

  4. I have an R engined 748S and can confirm some of the above. The belt covers have a gap all the way around the back of them where they bolt to the casing as they have raised bosses on the back. If the covers are a snug fit then they are stock covers.

The cylinder heads have no stampings on them unlike other models. The injectors and air box are different to all other models and if you look under the lefthand airbox side panel you should be able to see that the injectors are the shower type by their size. The airbox bolts through into the rocker inspection covers on this model, the only one that has this fitting

The water hose on the nearside twists around the frame on this model and the overflow tank is a different shape, if you know what a base model looks like then you can identify these items on a genuine R. In fact this hose is the same as fitted on a 998. It should be a one bolt ignition pick up, again not unique to this model.

The oil cooler is not unique either as the 748SP\SPS models had them.

The bike should of course have Marchesini wheels and an alloy subframe and a genuine mono seat, but again all of these are not unique to this model, seat and subframe were on the SP\SPS, the wheels weren't but other 9** models had them.

Beyond the above it can be hard to tell the difference at first glance, it should have a slipper clutch but there is no real way to tell if it has one fitted or not without stripping it but if it feel a little "shakey" pulling away you might be able to feel it under your clutch hand. The slipper clutch on these is quite crude.

    Hope this helps.

  5. 21mm (17mm on standard bikes) but as the others have said checking for the shower injectors and the cooling hose on the LHS of the bike is the way to go.

Pictures blatantly stolen from the web.

  7. Email Sofia at [email protected] with frame and engine numbers. Give a telephone number and she'll call next day (usually)

  8. Go to Ducati.co.uk and find the "contact from" part and send them the frame numbers. I even had a very nice Italian lady call me back last time. Normally takes about 2 days.

  12. Evening all. Picked up my 748r today in the back of a van, so not ridden it yet. It is wearing 50mm termi's that sound amazing. Will they get through an MOT ?

  14. Not always she won't, not if it means her getting the sack :Wideyed:

  15. Looks clean, nice bike!

  16. Bitch!

  17. It depends on how noisy they are and what your local MOT place is like. I never have any trouble with any of my bikes come MOT time and they all have Termignoni's on.

  18. Probably just an advisory on the pipes.

  19. My 916 wears 50's and all i get is an advisory. My 1198 wears 70's and that too gets an advisory despite sounding like the apocolypse. You should be fine. Nice bike btw. :upyeah:
