whats the procedure for changing the seals on the fugly with ohlins, is it an expensive job to get it done at the shop.
I purchased one of those fork seal cleaning tools, £5 delivered. Its a really thin piece of plastic with a hooked end. I was very sceptical, Having cleaned a whole load of stuff out from under the seal lip....its stopped leaking!!!
sorry should of said. not leaking the dust cover is perished to buggery might as well do both when in there
The forks were removed and have to be to change the seals (oil n dust). I couldn't get the whole bike into the jiffy envelope provided.
agree. the bikes needing the full bunna think i will leave it till winter and take it to D.G. over the winter take advantage of there winter rates. i really cant be arsed working on my own bikes.
Ok this was a thread on the 1098 but a lot should apply. 1098s Fork seals gone again Grrrrrrrrr | Ducati Forum Takes from that in brief for me 1) Don't use the GSXR seals as they could damage the Nitride coating 2) Try to get the Ohlins Road fork seal with the double lip 3) Get the bushings replaced at the same time as the fork seals 4) Fitting Kreiga Fork Seals may be an idea (I did to the 1098) Oh here is the fork seal cleaning tool video that was mentioned earlier. If it happens to me I'd certainly give that a go what's to lose at that price Not sure how much applies to the Fugly but thought I'd mention
Thanks for posting the video Old Jock. I had seen the seal cleaning tool advertised, but was unsure how it was used.
Finm Just to give you an idea of cost. I removed my forks ( Ducati 749s) and took them to 'Steve Jordan', an Ohlins specialist down here in Sunny Sussex. He stripped them, replaced all seals and oil and reset them back to standard settings for about £120. They were absolutely perfect when I put them back on the bike.
I can vouch for steve Jordan, he used to be a Suzuki specialist but only because the area at the time was saturated with ducati people. He's actually a ducati mechanic and his wife rides a ducati in one of the race series. He set up my flat slides on his rolling road, and also was highly recommended by K-Tech for all Ohlins or general suspension work. In a word, he knows hi onions, I can't recommend him enough
another cheapie method for fork-seal cleaning / removal of grit is to get a strip of 35mm film negative, then slip it up between seal & leg, and work round leg. A bit fiddly, but can sometimes help to 'clean' the seal between the rubber & fork-leg.....remember to pull it out afterwards (always a good rule in life!)
Well done...I knew I'd felt plastic film like this before, just couldn't place it. For the younger members of the forum...this is what we took pictures on before Mobile phones.
Used FTR Suspension to change the seals and the oil. Stripped them from my bike and couriered em over! Think I paid around £100 for everything
For the record. ..I used the £5 Castrol fork seal cleaner <Ebay> (identical to the video Old jock put up) and it fixed a leaking Fugly / Mutley seal 100%. ....1000 miles on a clean as whistle. I'm now wondering how many fork seals I changed over the years that was just an insects leg or wing case stuck in the seal.:Rage:
