Model differences

  1. Hi all

First post, so forgive me if this is an old question. I have the opportunity to buy a 2-year-old, low milage 1200 S Touring, and am wondering if there are any noteable changes or issues over the last two years I need to be aware of.

    Cheers,

    Gary.

  2. Hi Gary

There is nothing of note. All the software updates should have been done on the bike. There is a significant upgrade available to the rear brake. This wasnt a recall but was carried out under warranty only if the customer requested it. It makes a hell of a difference. Also check that the panniers have the latches fitted as this was an upgrade to give them a better watertight seal. You will see them quite easily on the front and back of the panniers.

It would be interesting to see how much you get the bike for as there are quite a few of us who now have two year old bikes.

Also check that when changing out of Urban mode to any other mode that a "DES pre-load" error doesnt appear on the little round information area of the dash.

I hope this helps. I'm sure other members will add to it.

    You will love it!

  3. mmm i am worried that we will put you off the purchase of this great bike. Check to see if the dash warning lights dont glow when they shouldnt...eg when the indicator is flashing, the ABS light can glow dimly. this is apparently an earthing issue and would mean a new dash should be ordered. A few posts have been seen on this. its happening to mine, and i need to go and make a warranty claim. however its not serious, and is only midly irritating at night if your a perfectionist.

i think thats about it...Brake, Dash, ECU flash to stop surging....great bike love it!!!

  4. ask if it comes with a one year ducati warranty - if its 2 years old then maybe the dealer can get you the optional 3rd year.

  5. IF it has had all the upgrades and recalls done (ask for proof), dealer service history etc, it should be worth considering. I personally wouldn't buy a used one unless it has some factory warranty remaining, preferably the extended third year. If you are buying from a dealer and the bike has no Ducati warranty remaining, you need to negotiate a warranty equivalent to the manufacturers warranty with the dealer, in writing, or I wouldn't touch it. The cost of repairs and sorting out problems, especially electronics, can be astronomical and the Multistrada is a cutting edge machine littered with expensive gizmos that can and have gone wrong in the past.

  6. I agree with viewdvb, a good long Warranty period is sensible.......note that if you buy a bike from a non Ducati Dealer Ducati will not let you buy the extended Warranty. Ducati also insists that existing owners register and pay for the extra year of cover by the 18 month anniversary of first registration/sale. So, as the bike you are looking at is very likely to be past that deadline talk to the Dealer and ensure that they can do the extended warranty for you if it wasn't done already by the previous owner.

Where is the bike for sale.....bike Dealer?

  7. Thanks to all of you. This is a private sale, originally seen on eBay, but also Bike Trader. I've sent various questions regarding warranty work and service history and had nothing back. This, along with all your comments has, put me off that particular bike.

I have now seen a brand new 2011 base model (no ABS) at a dealer. I've asked for a price to include full luggage and heated grips. The price he's offering is a little under £12K, which seems a reasonable saving over the S Touring. He wasn't willing to move on the price, whether base or S Touring. I've read elsewhere on the forum that the base model is not to be sniffed at, so I'm tempted.

Any thoughts on the price on offer, or the lack of ABS and DES generally? Any tips for negotiating a better price, bearing in mind I get the feeling he wants to shift the old model?

    Cheers

    Gary.

  8. Would that be at Snell's in Alton by any chance Gary?

I brought a base non ABS model from them in June 2010 & have completed some 6,000 miles on it so far. I've never missed the ABS or DES although I guess ABS is only something that you will regret not having after an incident! The DES I believe generally is a benefit if you plan to do a lot of 2 up riding with luggage which I don't so am happy with what I've got. For me I couldn't justify the extra £4k.

I know the Ducati luggage is quite expensive so another option would be to go for the GIVI PLXR312 mounting brackets & V35 cases Cases, Side Hardbags, Soft Luggages, Screens, Spoilers DUCATI Multistrada 1200 or as I did the slightly cheaper Kappa (but the same) options Givi Quick Release Pannier Rack for Ducati Multistrada 1200 .. - Motorbikes and Parts - Givi / Kappa Motorcycle Luggage Specialists - givi-quick-release-pannier-rack-for-ducati-multistrada-1200-10o-p-25278.html.

You can have mine for £9,500 including the luggage!

  9. Having slept on it, I've decided to go for the Touring S, as I feel I'm missing out on the full experience if I drop DES and ABS from the feature list.

Now all I need is a decent negotiating statagy. If Snells is anything to go by, there's not much room for manoeuvre...

  10. Then try other dealers. I live in S Wales but bought mine from Metropolis, Vauxhall.
