Metzeler Sportech M7rr

Discussion in 'Tyres' started by MHR50, May 28, 2014.

  1. Got the M7's fitted today. They certainly feel very grippy but its to early to say. Immediately noticed the quicker turning profile, particularly at the front end. Drops in faster than with the Pirelli DRC's that I had on before. Don't mind that as the SF isn't the quickest steering anyway. Just a matter of getting used to it. I don't expect them to last as long as the Z8's but I like the promise of more grip particularly as the front end of my SF doesn't offer a huge amount of feedback. The crucial factor for me will be how well these tyres maintain their performance past the half way point of their life. The Z8's stayed consistent almost to the end of the tyre. The Pirellis I've taken off seemed to have lost the plot with quite a lot of tread still left.

  2. I noticed the M7RRs noticeably drop off in performance with about 1mm before reaching the wear bars. At that point, the grip drops off significantly, turn-in response slows down, bump absorbtion is far reduced, and the carcass feels 'thin' transmitting everything.

  3. I'm with gimlet got them on my 1199 last week and they revolutionised the feel of the bike, in particular the steering absolutely chuffed with them versus the DRC's

  4. I'm near the end of my second set now. Performance just as good. Pretty marked reduction in the life of the rear since I had the bike tuned though.. I'm chuffed with the way I can get the power on really early in bends without the tyres budging a fraction, particularly since I haven't got TC.
On summer roads 2000 miles from the rear, 2500 if I'm lucky/careful looks to be the norm for my bike.

  5. Must be mine....took the zed to cjs for tomorrow's thrashing on the dyno.....It had just rained, wet on the ground and a bit in the air....yep, pretty slidy.....While it stayed rubber side up there's no way on this earth I'd even give it any gas at all. ....

  6. I have a set of M7rr's fitted on my 848 SF, I really like the way they feel, they turn in better than the PR3's I had previously, have had the bike leant over a lot more with no slipping or sliding deffo a big thumbs up from me, I have not changed my TC settings but may well set to 2 as current setting is on 3.
Currently done about 500 miles on them.

  7. I'd say mine feel as iffy in the wet as a knackered set of sc's. However since I lowered the pressures they felt better in the dry.

  8. I don't know what pressures mine have been set up with, but I will find out tomorrow when I see the bloke that fitted em.

  9. I'm about to pull the trigger on a pair of these so this is quite interesting

Initially I was going to try the sportsmart 2 but from what I've read they're not as good as the epic sportsmart 1's I had on the blade so I thought I'd try the metzeler

  10. Hey demo, long time no speaky, I'd be interested to see how you get on with yours....It could be as the zed is essentially "electronic bugger-all" and yours is electronic everything! So it might shield you from what the tyre is doing (which is what the electronics are for) ....just a theory of mine, I might be wrong....

  11. My SF is electronic bugger all and has 162 rwbhp and loves M7rrs. It had new headstock bearings fitted at a local independent last week and they road tested it and commented on how much they liked the tyres. (They also said f*** me what have you had done to that..) :Angelic:
Stupid question probably but as your Z is a bit of a hooners bike I take it you have checked the headstock bearings, wheel bearings, fork bushes and swinging arm bushes for play?
(My fork bushes are on the way out but its getting Ohlinised soon anyway)..

  12. Not had to.....The 4k that's it had done were by a stockbroker who rode it on the motorway into London in the middle of winter....It has had the easiest life ever....However that'll be changing soon as Chris currently has it at cjs.....still doesn't change my own opinion of the metzelers though....I'm just not impressed, they don't come close to the sc's. ...

  13. SC's it is for you then. Doesn't matter how good a tyre is, if you've got no confidence in it its no good to you.

  14. Well, yep y'd say that but in defence of the metzeler it's going to last longer and be better in the wet....my only beef is the fact that all the reviews pitched it directly at the sc which I think is way off the mark...

  15. Doesn't yours have tc? Or is that just the s?

  16. Only the S had TC. Mines just got an engine, a throttle and somewhere to sit. It'll bite you if you tease it.

  17. Thanks for this thread chaps, thanks to this I have just had a set of M7RRs delivered today for the 848. It has required a whole new mindset for me, I have been buying sport touring tyres for all my bikes for so many years that when I bought the 848 as my first sports bike last week I had to think differently.
Not only have I had to find guidance on tyres, I have also had to buy stands, and sockets to remove the wheels, and I will probably have to take the wheels somewhere to get the tyres changed! I normally change them myself on the ST2 and the wifes BMW F800.

  18. Hope they work out for you Bob. They won't last as long as a conservative sports touring tyre but they'll perform far better.
I'm going to have to start fitting my own tyres. If this year is anything to go by I'll be going through three sets a years between two bikes.
More bike gear to add to the list, but shouldn't take long to pay for itself at that rate.

  19. I had a pair put on my SF a couple of weeks ago. Now all scrubed in. I've had no itchy bum moments and they turn in nice and warm up quickly too.

Recommended to me by my local tyre guy and a quick check on here, decision made.
Not badly priced too at £245 fitted.

  20. I paid €246 fitted in France (£174.50). I had forgotten how expensive the UK was, not lived there for 10+ years now.
