Turning Went Heavy ???????

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by nice1myson, Jul 5, 2015.

  1. Whilst out today for a ride , i went across a cross junction and got stuck behind a car and tractor , whilst following i noticed something flick up from the front wheel , then when i went to steer to comeback to the left the bike wouldnt turn , felt like the front tyre was flat so i managed to pull over . I then gave the bars a turn , at 1st it didn't move then it worked free , no flat tyre either .:( So i pulled of to go again and the first lefthand bend the bike did it again heavy steering and went straight so after shitting myself i pulled over again :( any ideas what it might be help needed:upyeah:

  2. Dry or worn or corroded headstock bearings.........

  3. i nursed the bike home as i wasn't far from home , it's a new gsxr 750 with 2000 miles on the clock and it was fine but could it still be the head stock bearings :upyeah:

  4. Maybe the adjustment has tightened up........I had once a Yam that despite the locking ring and locking nut being tight, the more I turned right, the tighter the bearing got.

  5. What bike? My multi had a similar thing, turned out the mudguard extended had been flicked up and caught under the rad guard. Big stone did it. Took some looking around before I spotted it, and it would turn one way but not another

Edit just noticed gixer 750. No idea...steering damper buggared?!?

  6. My KTM went like that on the way to a service oddly enough. Steering went stiff as hell. Was under-steering horribly. It came on quite suddenly and I suspected a flat front tyre.
It was headstock bearings. They're taper rollers as standard on that bike and KTM are notoriously mean with the grease. These were dirty and rusty and some of them just stopped rolling which seized the steering up.
I wouldn't have thought ball races would go more notchy than solid though. There was no notchiness in mine, just stiffness. If it is headstocks and they're ball race do yourself a favour and fit taper rollers anyway. You get better feel and as they'll last much longer if you check them and grease them at service time.

  7. i recently found a small screw jammed under the bottom yolk and steering stop on my 848. the steering went v.tight then loosened off then went tight again.

  8. Agree with everybody

Very close visual inspection of all around the mudguard & yokes, then disconnect the damper as @bradders suggested and check without damper and check damper separately, I've seen that happen more than once with dampers.

If it still persists then as @Arquebus suggests, check steering bearing adjustment and bearings

Be interested to know what it is/was that's causing it, sounds a bit puckering to me

  9. If the bike is new to you but has 2,000 miles on the clock, perhaps previous rider(s) have performed lots of ham-fisted wheelies & the headstock bearings are damaged?

  10. I have an ohlins damper on my gixer and if wound 3/4 up its almost immovable left/right
