1200 DVT Test Ride

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by nkibble, Jun 23, 2015.

  1. I fail to accept that a crossover, with 40hp less and probably pretty similar in weight, feels quicker than a multi. Sorry.

  2. Surely it can "feel quicker" even though it may not be quicker?

  3. Not sure it can if the multi has had its throttle stretched hard. Its like saying a gsxr 600 feels faster than a gsxr 1000. Maybe it does if ypu are banging off the limiter on the tiddly one but only using half revs on the other

  4. I can only report on my experience and perception, my Honda is turbine smooth, a bit like an inline 4 engine but more "grunty" The Ducati felt more raw and vibey. Looking back the hour long ride to the dealer on my Honda probably didn't help the situation and so the Ducati felt so very different. I like a characterful engine, my other bike is an air cooled bmw boxer twin but even that engine feels more polished that the Ducati. I so wanted to fall in love with the Ducati as for me the new Multistrada is one of the best looking bikes out there but to sum up it was more show than go which is a pity.

  5. Shurely shome mishtake here?

  6. You don't always fall in love at first sight, you might be attracted at first sight, I certainly did not fall in love with my first Multi straight away, but trust me it grows on you big time, as for a characterful engine, well the first one certainly was, the newer one is growing on me, as it is so different but give it time and I know I will love it.

  7. I promise you my BMW engine is just sublime. Makes all the right noises, goes well,it ticks all my boxes. I'm on this forum further researching Multistradas as I've wanted one for ages and just feel so disappointed after my last test ride. I'm wondering if the bike was not at its best or were my expectations just too high, should I've not ridden that and my Honda back to back, I'm looking for answers and solutions or to see if others have had similar experiences is all.

  8. Sorry colin, you are describing a bike I have never ridden. I own a my14 now, and it wheelies off the throttle (no clutch) in the first two gears easy even in touring mode, loses very little on acceleration to a 1098 to illegal speeds and will out drag an 848/899 with the good right-wrist impetus and a little bravery...

It lacks the character of earlier Ducatis but thats a good thing. Last thing I want is a vibey bollock-number when I am sitting on it for 6 hrs in a day.

Having a gsxr 1000 with 170hp at the wheel, so probably 185 ish in comparison to 160 crank with the multi, the gixer is mental and charges at a rate incomparable

I think you should try another one, one that isnt broken or make sure they take it out of urban mode for you. :p lol

  9. I think you're bang on the money with it growing on me. I reckon I'll try another at a different dealer, the one I took out looked completely ragged to death and absolutely and utterly filthy. Looked like it had done a Dame sight more miles than the 800 showing on the clock!

  10. I'm not one for wheelies tbh but I appreciate a fast great handling bike and yes you're right with me trying another one before I totally write it off. Despite a disappointing start I am still drawn to them for some bizarre reason ;-)

  11. I always think v twins feel slower than they are actually travelling. Check the speedo.

I love my Multi and its engine but compared to most other engine layouts a v twin ( and especially a big capacity v twin) will never feel smooth and i'm actually quite glad that is so.

  12. Good point.

  13. I had the VFR1200F before this - so the 170BHP version of the engine in your Crosstourer.

I can say it was faster and smoother than the Ducati - but I can tell you the Ducati covers the ground quicker than the VFR did for me due to lighter and better handling - I have just about 1/4" chicken strips on the Ducati - was around an inch on VFR

I would say on long straights i was comfortably riding 20 to 30mph faster on the VFR (less wind and noise) - but the Ducati seems to be going slow through the corners - but when you look down you realise you are 15 to 20MPH faster than the VFR - just because it turns in better.

Maybe the Ducati with S suspension just suits me better than VFR?

But the VFR 1200F Engine in the Ducati MTS would be a bike to own for me - but I am very happy with MTS.

Did 140 mile ride this morning - most I could do on the VFR was 70 before my ass was asleep and I had to get off.

I had to get off at 140 for fluids :) in and out..

  14. Depends what you mean by smooth. A 90 degree V twin is smooth in the sense of having excellent primary and secondary balance of the reciprocating parts in the engine, and smooth in the sense of having minimal torsional vibration of the rotating parts. But the power impulses are necessarily large, uneven and coarse so it cannot be smooth in that sense.

  15. The bigger the capacity though the less smooth they become because the bigger pistons, by their very nature, can only cause more vibration.

I can spin the engine up on my 748 such that it is very smooth almost like an IL4 but the Multi i have is never quite the same.

  16. This I am testament to....I've been without a duc for 4 months now and decided I need another one...my first duc 4 years ago was a leap of faith as I knew no one that had one....sold it to get my rsv4 as in 20th years never owned anything with fairing, got an 1100 evo hyper 2 years ago which I just sold to get my z1ooo and after not having it for the last 4 months it's the motor that I miss and that's going from an initial summary of "it sounds like a bucket of nails that's just about to blow...."

  17. Spin that 748 next to a 600 sports, and unless you have taken the fly wheel off (popular mod). The 1299 rips up the revs, the multi doesn't, suspect more to do with flywheels and weight of internal components.

  18. Dude had it in Urban mode.

    Or shifts up at 3K.

  19. I have ridden a pre water cooled GS's , I have a had a dam long test ride on a LC GS before I bought the Multi, while test riding a friend came with me, who has a Pre Water Cooled GS Aventurer, and there was one section where he was trying to keep up on video, he was hitting the rev limiter, LC GS left him for dead, as if he was not moving, and I was not even trashing the bike, I have ridden my 14 Plate Multi with him as well, and seriously there is no comparison between the 2 bikes in performance and handling, in his words you have to fight the Adventurer around corners when following, you riding the MS just glides around, drops on a 6 pence from side to side, He is a dam good rider, better than me, but not in a million years would he sell his GS though he loves that challenge, the agricultural feel and ride about the bike which he has ridden for miles all around Europe.
