Keep thinking about converting my 848 streetfighter in to a 1098, I have heard all I need is barrels and pistons, will the crank and conrod be man enough for the job though. Has anyone converted either their streetfighter or 848 SBK into a 1098 any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've often fancied having the sharper steering geometry of the 848 frame on my 1098. It might be cheaper to simply change engines. I doubt if the cam shafts are the same and you might need the 1098 airbox, throttle bodies and exhaust system as well.
Out of curiosity do you know what diameter your headers are on the 1098 ? I am pretty sure the 848 is 57mm or there abouts
Don't know if it's different for the street fighter but for the 848 sbk, you can either buy the 1098 barrels then buy the Pistons or you can buy the full kit from what's his name in Germany. Only read about 3 different people doing this but all 3 were happy with the results.
Haven't measured precisely because I can't find my verniers but going by eye with a rule 1098 headers do appear to be 57mm.
Mate of mine has a 999 with full system and they are 57mm so we measured the circumference which is within a mm of my 848 SF pipes hence why I reckon they are 57mm
This sounds like a whole load of time, money and grief. Sell the 848, take the money you have for the conversion and buy the 1098. Ducati build them better than you ever will.
Pass the bucket someone, but seriously yes they look awesome I just don't like the noise, had couple of 749's years back thank god they went down the route of wet clutch.
Have heard that converted engines don`t last as long due to the bottom end not being strong enough. Agree with Robarano. New machine cheaper, easier and safer. Would really like a wet clutch myself but the 1098 is worth it just for that engine.
Stick a 1098R engine in it.. Dry clutches are good: easy access and less drag. Open clutch covers look groovy but make them much noisier. Just fit Termis and ear plugs.
I'm with the OP - f'ing clatter! I'm considering a MTS or Diavel engine for another build...:Bookworm:
It certainly doesn't get ridden enough. I have 2 weeks off from this weekend and I'm going to change that
Jeez, get yourself a 1098. You get used to the dry clutch, but I do admit that it is loud. When I bought the bike the first thing my GF told me was that the bikes was fu..ed.
