Smidsy..another Mts1200 Bites The Dust!

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by AirCon, Jul 31, 2015.

  1. He's just awake now.
Spoke to his wife, who said he's complaining of a numb leg and foot. He doesn't know it's not there yet!
She has left the ICU for 1/2 an hour, so his team can talk to him.
I'm driving up tonight to see him (as I wasn't allowed in before surgery).
It's a terrible time for us, but much worse for him (especially when the life changes sinks in).
In the last 20 hours we've gone from being told he's not going to make it to this. Clearly we're grateful for this, but what a price for a fun hobby.

To cap it all he also has two broken wrists.
His wife says his ICU nurse is a pretty petite girl, so he's going to be very frustrated....at least she still has sense of humour between the tears.

Just normal life stuff now, like trying to track down his ruck sack, mobile phone, house keys, clothes and other personal belongings.
The police team from the accident scene are on rest days until the 4th August, so unobtainable.
Although not confirmed, one of their colleagues said that they were so contaminated that they went into bio-hazard bags at the accident site and would have been immediately destroyed.
Surely this cannot be right? Brand new Iphone would make a nasty mess of an incinerator.

  2. Happened to a mate (on the bike he borrowed from my uncle) and they changed the road so you can't turn right out of that junction anymore. It's left and up the road to the roundabout. Makes a lot of sense but sadly, you can't make turning right out of a junction, against the law to help us all out.

He was lucky to keek his limbs, bike snapped at the headstock and he couldn't ride for years. In my opinion not enough is done to punish the drivers in these situations. SMIDSY and calling it an accident just doesn't cut it and certainly doesn't help rehabilitate the life of the injured party.

  3. At times like these I wish I could say or do something that could make things right. However I can only offer you my best for your bro and your family. From seeing your post you are showing a tremendous strength.

  4. So sorry to hear this bad news mate, is my worst fear (losing a limb)

I've got to say though that he's still with you and sounds like after a while he might be back fighting fit.

As a positive note, my sister designs and fits prosthetic limbs and is a leg specialist. Over the years we've had many chats about this type of injury (considering my job) and it's far reaching consequences; and you've stated that he should keep the knee joint which is the best news you could have asked for. My sister always talks about how important that is as it makes it so much easier to walk, run and function completely normally, even so much that nobody else can even spot you've lost the foot. Think of that Oscar Pistorius fella - controversial of course but beyond that, you could not tell he had no legs below the knee - no limping or any other signs of trauma. ..... I truly wish this is the case for your brother, with some good rehabilitation and a few months to recover hopefully he will be back down the pub with you in no time.

If you want, i'm sure I can arrange to get my sister in at work here a organise a telephone call to help put your mind at rest? However i'm sure the docs down there will look after you. But if you've got a question, call me and i'll ask her as soon as she's back from holiday.

Chin up mate - i'm sure the future isn't as bleak as you might have thought.

    Mart

  5. Just caught up with this thread. Best wishes to the rider and all his family.

The Oxford Radcliffe people have shown fantastic treatment & patient care to a former colleague who was very badly injured in a car crash. She ended up losing her foot following a below-knee amputation, but the transitional care she received in taking on a prosthetic limb was second to none.

I really hope your brother recovers well, and who knows...he may choose to return to riding at some point? There was a guy on the Ducati.ms site who lost a leg in a SMIDSY & he found a way to ride again.

The most important thing is that he recovers & with appropriate support he can find a way to enjoy a long & fulfilling life.

As his brother, I wish you all the best too. I appreciate this is a very trying time, and I hope things take a turn for the better for you and your family.

  9. Such terrible news for you and all your family. We can only hope recovery is made, but it will be a long haul. Maybe it might be of small comfort to your brother that we are all thinking of him.

  12. He's sitting up in ICU, which is amazing as the rest make it look like Gods waiting room and the queue is moving along quickly.

"it is what it is" was his only comment on the missing foot.
He's back into surgery tomorrow for more "leg work". The knee is a mess and plenty of skin is missing; completely from the knee down, so a skin graft is going to be required.
The twin identical casts on the forearms is making moving hard. Spent 2 hours with him, but only about 3-4 minutes of conversation....he keeps having a little sleep mid sentence.

If people are interested I'll keep you posted on the road back to biking.
In the meantime I think the Husky NOX will be "for sale"...as this is a 600cc single "kick start only" bike...I don't think I should let him set his goals that high!

  19. Crap news,if you are to loose a limb I think a lower leg would be the least invasive. Please tell your brother many people are wishing him well , also tell him there is at least one firefighter in Britain back to full duties after loosing a lower limb, life ain't over. Gws dude.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  20. After a +12 hour operation yesterday I've been told that they took more of the lower leg and that there was a few minor complications. He's in recovery at present and his wife will let me know more this afternoon when she is allowed to see him.
