749 Buying 2003 Ducati 749

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by tomfomes, Oct 4, 2015.

  1. Hi all,

I would like to buy my first Ducati. I found this one close to where I live. It is a 2003, it has 33,000 km and the cost is 3,400 EUR. It has no service history and I was told that it suffers with soft brake lever, but it works (the seals in brake were changed). The guy from shop selling it says he was driving it himself and says it is a good bike just reccomends to change belts as he don't know when they were changed for the last time. What do you think about this deal? Is it a too high mileage considering it has no service history? I would be interested what do you think about it as experienced people with Ducati. I really appriciate any help I can get.

  2. Can't give you any help I'm afraid but welcome anyway Dave :)

  3. Hi welcome to the forum. I have no idea about the bike but I'm sure you will get plenty of advice on here. I would always spend extra for fsh but that's just me. All the best.

  4. Not sure either, but its got two things on it that you might have wanted to upgrade to later on if the bike is a base model 749 ...termignoni exhaust and Ohlins rear shock.

  5. Looks good. Goodish price but no bargain as it really needs belts/shims/oil+filters/set up which is 500euro minimum maybe 750 and best done by duc independent. That mileage wouldn't bother me too much if I was fairly confident the oil had been changed yearly. 749/999 are great bikes, I tour 2 up on mine a fair bit, theyre really versatile for a sports bike.

  6. Thanks guys. I am mainly interested whether 33,000 km isn't too much. I am trying to avoid buying a relatively cheap bike and then spend fortune to get it fixed. When I asked the seller what would he do to make the bike 100% he said he would just change the belts and do few small cosmetic upgrades (new levers, one-two missing screws). The problem is I'm not sure whether he's honest or he is just trying to sell the bike at any cost.. This is how it sounds:

    Cheers,
    Tomas

  7. I'm a bit surprised by no service history. How many owners? Where has it come from and been?
i don't think the mileage is a problem really. My 999 now has 46'000 kms and works fine. But then I know that the oil has always been changed on time, and I have never scrimped on the expensive services. That is what service history gives you - peace of mind.

it doesn't sound like a bargain, as such. I bet there are others around with a similar mileage for a similar sum, but maybe with a service history. The 749s had an Ohlins as standard, didn't it? The 999s did, at any rate.

Then again, it's maybe a very tidy bike. Big services on these bikes are pricey, if done by a really good dealer, so you will indeed be adding a fair bit for the service (belts and whatnot) before you really dare give it some stick. If it has no service history, you have to assume it might need a service.

  8. Thank you all for help. Unfortunately the bike was sold before I made my decision.

  9. You should get as good as that or better before spring nx year. Take your time do a bit of research on years and models. O5-06 facelift with red frame are worth the extra.

  10. Thanks for the tip. Problem is that it is really hard to find in Ireland. At the moment there is no 749 for sale. You're right the later model is better and the one with red frame and black wheels looks much better. I will wait now and see what comes.

  11. If you're in Ireland, why do you have a Swiss flag appearing in your avatar?

  12. It is probably because I work for Swiss company and it has Swiss IP address or something... So when I first replied on forum from work the flag changed to Swiss.

  13. I wouldn't be too upset, IMHO it looked very scruffy,, and when an owner cant even clean the bike before selling tells you a lot..... Cant you buy one in the uk and treat it as a holiday trip collecting it?

  14. Maybe not a bad idea. Could you please send me some good uk websites where I can check used motorcycles. I found only autotrader.co.uk. Are there any other good websites to look? Thanks.

    Tomas

  15. Yes Autotrader is good but also Ebay or on this excellent friendly site.......lol..... and if its in Wales or Scoty all the better for the ferry....;)

With Ebay I would bid and win then offer to pay cash on collection,,, and if there's any problems, or the bike isn't up to std or something that's not pointed out in the listings, walk away!

  20. Hi all,

thank you for the advices. If I won't find a bike here in Ireland, I will consider to bring one from UK. I found this shop (Rite-bike) which is based in Bradford. This is a pretty good location for me as it is close to Manchester where I could fly directly from Shannon. I have checked the bikes they offer and now I'm considering one of these two:

    2005 Ducati 749S, 11423miles, 3owners, Termignoni Exhaust (£3,790)
    Used DUCATI 749 S 749S 749 BIPOSTO BELTS CHANGED 06/15 MOT 05/16 2005 54 PLATE Super Sports

    2006 Ducati 749, 15356miles, 3owners, Stock Exhaust (£3,590)
Used DUCATI 749 749 BIP 749 BIPOSTO PSH LONG MOT 05/16 2006 06 PLATE Sports

Which one do you think is a better deal? On the first one I like that it is an "S" model and have Termignoni. The second one on the other side is newer model. Thank you for your opinions.

    Regards,
    Tomas
