Anyone A Ford Fan?

  1. It didn't end well - I did an RS owners race day at Donnington and all morning I was easily the quickest thing there and was showing off to spectators hanging the arse end out! Then this nasty kermit green Cossie hatch with a proper plodded up she'll turned up - Severn valley Motorsport in huge letters down the side did me properly through the Kramer curves and flew past putting about 15ft of flame out the back! Wasn't having that? 1 lap later a massive bang, smoke, oil, water and flames - a con rod straight through the side - goodbye Cossie hello porker 928

  2. I drove a rare Capri when I was 17, apparently it was quite desirable but not my bag really. I'd quite like an old escort with a more modern engine, all silly money now.

I drove a Focus RS in standard road trim round Mallory 2009 and it felt like it took forever down the straight and just not enough grip in the corners, so a bit frustrating.. I expect it would probably be more fun on a back road, narrow tarmac that is not so flat but I'm not suggesting that's a good idea.

I would have an older Mustang if I won the euro lottery but I would have a few cars. Perhaps a GT40

  3. I know what you mean – they had quite a following in their day but front end was over-long and a bit floppy, bit of a design exercise in my opinion. There was an RS3100 and an even rarer RS2600 for obligation I think also Jeff Uren did a V8 engine version called the Comanche and I think Ford America later put a Windsor V8 in it . Always preferred the "Essex" to the "Cologne" V6, I remember Swaymar used to get some useful hp out of them, the fibre timing gear was one of the design flaws. Another extremely rare Capri was the Australian version which was a smaller car, still a coupe but entirely different in fact an improvement afaiwc but still didn't look anything like a Mustang did I get away with that?

  4. I really don't know much about them.

The Capri was midnight blue from memory. At least 3.1 lts (maybe 3.2) The engine was v configuration. I think it may have been V6. Someone who did work on it commented how big the valves were. I recall it had more than one carb.

It had wide arches that flowed with the shape of the car, the rear end was wide, looked more like this Capri Power Archive Forum > The Fat Capri - Update

It had recaro seats in, some kind of tartan & brown leather interior. RS wheels... reg was something like GRMIV. It belonged to the managing director at an engineering company and they all thought it was great. It was a long time ago. When he sold it a collector ripped his arm off.

I can't find anything like it on google images but I was made to think it was all genuine, or parts were factory fitted or something like that?.. I was not so interested back then.

I also knew someone who had a Capri that featured in street machine? that had a V8 mustang motor, 600 hp when running nitros. Basically a drag race car with a reg plate. (huge rear wheels, line lock, alloy fuel tank etc) would rock when it rev'd and could lift the front wheels from a stand still launch or more likely get out of shape and crash.
It should not have been on the road in my opinion hence I did not get in that.

I did however go to my wedding in a Anglia with a V8 in.. That was not one of the best choices I ever made.
Big engine = heat, little windows. That also had huge rear wheels, sequential (3 speed?) box etc....

  5. I had a sapphire cosworth for 5 years, cost a bloody fortune to run. I used to get around 15 mpg. Prior to that I had a red sierra xr4x4 with a turbo technics twin turbo conversion fitted and fully adjustable suspension, loved that car. Very very torquey. I did own a 1.6 capri too after my very first car, an austin allegro in brown lol. My third car was an XR3i followed by an opel manta gte. The glory days lol. Nowadays I have a mondeo titanium X company car, boring but does what it should very well.

  6. I often thought if someone was to start producing the finer cars of yesterday with modern running gear etc there may well be a market for them. Thinking of the Capri, MK2 escort etc. Maybe I should set a plant up in Brazil?

  7. They already do, zetecs and duratecs were a common install in old escorts years ago.
There are also companies that specailise in building retro cars with newer engines and running gear, Old Porsche 911's are common > not cheap though. I think Jags do it...

    > Last week someone asked me to do some work (this is public knowledge)
A new D5 produced in limited numbers with a V8 in it that is supercharged I believe with all the mod cons.

  9. I'll stick with a "proper" Mustang. Not convinced by the new Mustang, preferred the S197 but a '65 is what it's really about!

I'm a Ford guy and always end up with them. Started on Cortinas - Mk5s were crap but Mk1s were epic. My favourite was a Mk1 Super GT, an export only model combining Super trim with GT mechincals. Unfortunately someone else liked it and nicked it from Brighton Railway Station and I'm still p#$#ed off about it 16 years later!

Now have the 'stang and an '89 XR3I cabriolet. The XR is a complete hairdressers car but strangely a fun drive now. For some reason you still have to drive them like a dick like back in the 90s. All wheel spin and understeer. Took it to Le Mans last year and got told it was "the best car on the campsite"....although I would have swapped it for the McLaren.

  11. Ive had two mk2 cortinas, a very early mk3 Capri (1.6 auto) a 1959 zodiac and a 1963 zephyr 6 (very briefly, it was a total bucket) the afore mentioned 96 mustang (a misfiring lada would have been both quicker and more reliable, as well as more fun to drive) as well as a 93 escort - the best worst car I ever had, in so far that it always did what you wanted, and it was immaculate but it went, handled and stopped like a drunken pig on a skateboard.

  13. Gotta be better than a tired old 911 that 9 other 50 yr old have had the best out of?

  14. I hire a Mustang every year for my two weeks road trip - they're usually between 1 and 6 months old. Each year, they get a slightly upgraded dashboard/stereo, but they still drive like a thirty year old car.

  15. Have you driven this latest model. New rear suspension so it's meant to handle ?

  16. What spec have you ordered?

  17. I had a week old black convertible one (300 miles on the clock) in june this year - I love 'em, but I'm too old to throw 'em round corners. I took it back with 2400 miles on, plus a dint in the passenger door where some cnut flung a door against it in a casino car park. If I lived in the States, I'd have one at their price....
