996 Rear Tyre Width - Bag Of Worms ?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by DucatiGary, Sep 3, 2015.

  1. No, 998s came on 190/50. But as per the the rest of the debate most everyone sticks 180/55 on now.

  2. For years, and years, I have heard owners and shops say go 180 because the narrower tyre helps turn in. Yet no one ever talked about profile and the fact it was narrower and taller, hence like an upside down triangle it drops easier from its point when pushed

Maybe they didnt think plebs could handle that nugget of knowledge

  3. To reduce any confusion Gary. Long and short of it is you should be using a 190/50. That's what the factory recommend so that's what to use. Anything else will be down to preference due to your own requirements and experience. There's enough adjustment in the chassis to get the most from poor tyres or make a good tyre feel shit though.

  4. rigtyo confused.com got a 190x50 on 6 inch rim, and need new tyres, is the 190 tyre still supplied by many manufacturers, or would I be better with a 180x55??? bikes not going any where near a track, quite like @bradders Bermuda triangle theory, and did change the ZZR1400 to a 55 profile which worked a treat,

  5. Metzeler do a 190/50 in the M7RR and Pirelli do one in the Diablo II. Andy

  6. Ive used 190 and 180 on mine,I ride like a girl and could tell no difference.

  7. Try for yourself, it's like the ST2's running 170's vs 180's, I have run 190's on the 998 and 180's, I can't tell the difference or just ride accordingly, I am not racing on the road, so why pay extra for 10mm? I think 180's are appropriate for 5.5 rims so that's what I do for both bikes.

  8. 5.5 inch is what a 180 is designed for, 190's on a 5.5 inch rim feel weird IMHO, not sure about the other way although personally I would stick with 190.

Why do u want to go 180? For faster steering? If so then consider a 190/55 which is more modern providing it will cheat the hugger.

  9. I had a look at the Gixer forum, amd most people that fitted the 180 did it for track use, sticking a 180 on 6 inch rim, on the road reduces the tyre life by up to 50% and gives a smaller contact patch, I did have a 190x55 but the bike really leaned on the side stand, so I'll stick with what Mr Ducati put on the bike
