Oberon rear wheel nut, eek.

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by steviegasgas, Oct 2, 2012.

  1. Sorry to hear this. When I ordered the socket, 2 or 3 years ago now, I received it within a fortnight. I had heard recently on Ducati.ms the Motomfg were having problems.

  2. That's the same place i bought mine, no problem at all, had the wheel nut in 7 days, strange.

  3. Ordered mine from the same place earlier this year, and also received it in 7 days.

  4. Try pouring hot water over the nut first, I've always done that and never had a problem

  5. No problem. I ordered from motomfg on account of the number of people on this forum who'd ordered one without a problem and received it in good time. Throw in my bad experience of motomfg and proportionately the service no longer looks so good. Hence I thought I'd warn others who may find the thread. Either its admin is lousy or it's in trouble I guess since I've not had a reply.

  6. Many thanks. I think I'll order it. Never seen it before. I'm guessing it must be a relatively new advert.

  7. I can't remember how I stumbled across it. I got mine from Toolacademy.

  8. Vulpine2, this is probably a daft question but here goes.
What makes this socket suitable for an impact driver, is the metal of a coarser finish, if so would it or could it mark or damage the nut if used with an ordinary socket set, or impact driver for that matter.
I need one and it's now down to that one or the American one.

  9. Motofgm isn't responding to me. Or PayPal. I realised today my order status on the website still says "processing".

Impact sockets have thicker sidewalls than chrome counterparts and are softer so that they wear rather than break from repeated impacts. According to all the blurb, chrome sockets shouldn't be used with impact drivers.

I used a chrome socket with a couple of impact guns on a nut that wouldn't budge. No damage to the nut although the finish of the socket did look rather distressed on the wrench side of it.

  10. Cheers for the reply 1976dc, appreciate it.

  11. My experience is that an impact socket is no more likely to damage a nut than an 'ordinary ' one. The only difference you'll notice is the lack of a chrome finish - so you may need to give them a wipe over occasionally with WD40 or similar if stored in damp conditions.

  12. I'm currently attempting to remove the XDiavel rear wheel. The 1199 is easy in comparison. Yesterday I broke a 3/4 knuckle on a breaker bar and today I broke a 3/4 to 1/2 inch socket. Used all the techniques described here but it won't budge.

  13. Double Wow! I've got the Clarke impact driver, and it zipped the nut off my M12R in a couple of seconds. Yours must be welded on!! Perhaps try some heat on the nut as this seems to work in most cases... good luck with it, and let us know when/how you get it off

  14. You bust the 3/4-1/2" using the impact wrench? Maybe use the Clarke with an 1/2" impact socket and no adapter?

  15. The 3/4 to 1/2 adapter was bust by hand as was the 3/4 knuckle. I went through the same rigmarole with the 1199 first time round however when using the same tools / tricks as now I was able to get the 1199 nut off.

I've used the laser tool linked earlier in this thread and the socket to that has started to distort as has a cut down draper chrome 3/4 55mm socket.

I'm going to try another 3/4 socket tomorrow but I'm reaching the point where I'm not comfortable with the force required. I'm using a 3/4 39 inch breaker bar with a scaffold pole just under 2m in length over the top of it.
