1198s Traction Control

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by GreenOn, Jul 27, 2016.

  1. Hello Folks,

Sorry, but another question before I pull the trigger on an 1198, is the 1198S TC system on 09/10 bikes any good, heard that it is quite agricultural compared to some of the latest gear out there, only going to be used on the track.

    Thank for your input.

  2. Mine doesn't seem to work on my R.

  3. I'm guessing that it will be the same traction control fitted to the 1098R which has been criticised in one breath for being intrusive and the next praised for preventing a high side. The Nemesis system has its devotees but others find the OE kit perfectly adequate. Mine's only kicked in under acceleration in the wet on a new tyre so I have yet to have an opinion. Andy

  4. from memory, the R is very different to the 1198 tc. One cuts the spark, again from memory, the other cuts the fuel

  5. DTC units for 1098R and MY09/10 1198s share the same part number except for a revision change from 1A to 1B which indicates it's the same part. Andy

  6. Careful. The 1098R part is bespoke to that bike. You can tell as it has 2 connectors instead of the usual single connector used on other bikes. I know as my bike came with a Nemesis system, I had to move heaven and earth to buy a spare DTC unit that was missing when I bought the bike.

  7. I'm only as accurate as the information I can access. If that is crap, I don't stand a chance. In my defence the information I found was on the Ducati.com web site. Sorry guys if I've got it wrong. Andy

  8. I thought the R was unique, and the later 1198 much better

  9. An interesting video of the 1198S DTC in action. It does sound like it cuts the fuel by all of the popping and bangng when it cuts in.

  10. As above from memory the R cuts the spark 1198 cuts the fuel

  11. In contrast, the Nemesis system is a lot more refined.

  12. It's works just fine but no it's nowhere near as linear as the current stuff of say the ZX10, BM etc

  13. Yeah, it will be a bit agricultural compared to the new stuff. I run a 1098R with a Nemesis interface and to be honest with you I dial it right down to 2 (almost off!) because it's sphincter twitching when it kicks in. As stated, the 1098R cuts from ignition and the 1198 cuts with fuel. I think this is due to prevent damaging cats on the 1198, the pops and bangs of unburnt fuel would knacker them apparently. The 1098R doesn't have them.
The new stuff is super smooth. Did a trackday with an S1000RR bloke and his TC went tits up. It's like his world just fell apart and he would NOT go back out without his TC. He was obviously so reliant on it he'd lost all his throttle skill and judgment. I don't think that's good.

  14. The TC on my 2011 SP which I assume is the same as 09/10 S is very smooth, a bit like the bike is being held back by a giant elastic band if that makes sense.
I personally don't like TC and leave it dialed down, there are 8 settings, 8-4 make the dashboard light up like a christmas tree on bumpy roads if you get a bit keen with the throttle and will slow you down, 4-1 allows a certain amount of slipage and can be used as a track aid but slill lights up the dash on entry and exit of tight corners at maximum lean.
Have a read of the Ducati user manual section for "Traction control riding technique" :grinning:
    Kev.

  15. I believe that's correct on the 1198. The DTC can't be enabled with the standard ECU to prevent damage to the cats. When you buy your Termis and ECU, you can eneble the system. (IIRC :Angelic:)

  16. Oh, ok. That makes sense. The sneaky fuckers think of everything damn them!

  17. @kev moose

What do you have yours set to on the road? I put it on 4 and have never really noticed it cut in to be honest.

  18. 8 is a different story! Did that by accident once.

  19. Yes I find 4 is good for the road.

  20. Me too, when I took it to the Ducati delaer complaining of a misfire, the first thing he said without even getting out of his chair "try turning off the traction control" - by mistake it was on setting 8.
