Multistrada 2013 Cutting Out

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by hill100, Jul 27, 2016.

  1. I have just returned from a week in Germany where I had trouble with my MS suddenly cutting out at any where between 4000 revs and up to 9000 revs. It is like you have hit the rev limiter. Very scary when in the middle of overtaking a line of traffic and the vehicle coming the other way suddenly gets very close to wiping you out. The engine comes back to life once you roll of the throttle and the revs drop. No lights come on the dash, its just like hitting the rev limiter. The bike has done 7500 miles and is booked in next week at Glasgow Ducati for its service. I spoke to the head service engineer who said that they have had quite a few bikes doing this and was normally attributed to the exhaust valve sticking. But he would check out all possibilities. I have seen previous posts on the forum which show corrosion at the mechanism where the end of the cable attaches to spring wheel opening the butterfly valve: so I checked mine and it was very clean and the valve moved freely. I disconnected the cable and took it for a quick spin but it still cut out at 9000 revs. I was so hoping that this was going to be the problem, as it would be an easy fix. I have checked the battery leads and they are fine. The bike runs sweet apart from the intermittent problem. I have a lot of confidence n Ducati Glasgow finding the solution, but it might be a bit of a fishing exercise. Has anyone had this on there MS and if so what was the cure?

  2. I am not that technical but someone who is will be along soon. Most problems though seem to be the side stand switch, worth a try.

  3. Whatever it is, it is not the exhaust valve sticking. A stuck valve may reduce the power but it will not cause the bike to cut out. More likely an electrical issue and the side stand switch is a good bet.

  4. Thanks for your reply. I have been told by the Ducati dealer in Germany and in Glasgow that the exhaust valve sticking is a very common problem which causes the engine to act like its hit the rev limiter, which is the symptom I experienced. However I checked the side stand switch with the engine in gear. Gave it a little shake and the bike cut. The movement at the bottom of the cable was no more than one millimetre. I ordered a new switch today. So hopefully its sorted.

  5. Sounds like it's the side stand switch then. I hope that sorts it.
A rev limiter action is only momentary, the ignition cuts but immediately starts again and continues to do so until the revs drop, so the bike doesn't slow down it just doesn't go any faster. Quite different from the bike cutting out.

  6. That happened to me on my 2012 MTS. They replaced the side stand switch and when it did it again they ended up replacing the right hand switch gear too.

  7. Happened on my 2010 too. I made a side stand cheater by buying the connector from eBay. Before I did that I wedged a paperclip in there to cheat it for the ride home.
