748 748sp Project

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Messer, Sep 24, 2016.

  1. Hi all, I've been offered a 748SP project but it's in bits. The engine was removed from the frame a few years back and it's been stuck in a shed since. The engine was then stripped down and everything put in to a box.

The bike had done less than 5k miles, and the current owner bought it like this so we have no idea why it was stripped down and left.

Front discs are rusty with it being sat for so long but apart from that it's all there.

He wants £1500 for the bike which to me seems fair, but how complex are the motors to rebuild on these as is currently in chunks - ie a crank case, pistons, heads, clutch, cases etc etc

  3. I can't imagine the motor was stripped for any other reason than it was broken.

Its worth well above that in parts alone so probably worth paying the cash and seeing whats involved.

  4. as above, if the bulk is there you can't lose on parts. Buy it..

  5. Buy it.
I'd strip the motor down to the crank and check everything out though as you on't know what's wrong with it.

  6. It would be to do a full rebuild on. My RG500 gamma is nearly finished now so need something else to start on

  7. Well worth a punt, plenty of value in parts.

  8. Pay up! It's worth it?

  9. I'm actually quite fancying it, needs a lot of work but I know it would end up a peach. Just working on logistics and trying to fathom of any of the important bits are missing. The motors on these look pretty easy to work on, from memory it's just the con rods and camshafts that are different to normal BP models isn't it?

  10. If it's like the later 'R' models it also has fatter cambelts, so the standard can belt covers are spaced out from the engine (one of the ways to tell a genuine R motor)

  11. Don't think they're different, like the 748R.

  12. Only the 748R has wider cambelts the SP and SPS models just use the stock 748 belts.

The SP had high lift cams and used Pankl steel rods whereas the SPS had titanium. If you rebuild go for Titanium of which the 748R uses the same rods, so they could possibly be a few sets about.

Certainly the valves on the SPS are different as well as they are coated in a different material, whether the SP is the same I am not sure. I also believe the pistons may have a deeper pocket to allow for the extra valve lift.

All the barrels are the same in the 748 range.

748R engine, you can clearly see the spaced out belt covers.

  16. The seller has put it on gumtree now and had a few offers for swaps. If anyone is a bit more local to him in Londonderry and can move quicker than me then you might be able to score it :)

  17. I went and viewed her today, 5 mins from me, she was rough, very rough. Engine looked like it had done 20,000 miles and had been lying about in not ideal conditions for quite some while, radiator and oil cooler where badly knocked about. A real pity that someone let such a bike deteriorate like it. I bid him but he was looking a trade as the Mrs would have taken the cash off him for upcoming wedding so said he'd think about it and let me know. He just contacted me to say its now gone, took an 07 Suzuki bandit as a swap. Bit disappointed to miss out but he really only wanted a trade and I had nothing to suit.

  18. Yes he messaged me to say the same. He was wanting £1500 for it, I'm actually pretty happy it's gone as I could really do without trying to piece it together, I just can't resist a project that's all. I'd have ended up spending an absolute packet on that bike, so good news to me :)

  19. part of me feels the same but I kinda had my heart set on it.... I suppose I would need to finish the one I bought 3 years ago that wasn't meant to be a project at all!

  20. If only I'd seen this earlier id have had it.
