Insurance For First Bike In The Uk

Discussion in 'Insurance - Sponsored by Ducati Insurance' started by Stef, Jan 3, 2017.

  1. Dear all,
    sorry if this question has been asked already, I couldn't find it anywhere else...
    My scenario is:
    - I’m 31, had my Full Motorcycle license since 2008, and a full car EU license since 2003 and never had an accident;
    - I had a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R (2011 model) back in Italy, which I have sold, and never had claims on that;
    - I am looking for a Ducati 959 Panigale over here;
    - I moved to the UK on Sep 2012;
    - my license is full EU (might apply to get it converted to Full UK).
    The situation will be:
    - bike stored in a garage;
    - I’ll be the only driver;
    - I’ll fit data tag (or similar) + mechanical anti theft devices;
    In terms of insurances, what would your advice be?
    Is there any chance I can carry my NCB from the Italian provider?
    I look forward to hearing from you,
    thank you so much for your time!!
    All the best,
    Stefano

  2. Insurance companies are like the mafia mate

    Good luck. I very much doubt they'll let you use no claims accrued in another country, worth a try I guess..

  3. Well, if it's really the mafia, hopefully my Italian passport will get me a good deal haha!

    Anyway, is there any company you know of/tried you could recommend? I was having a look at Ducati Insurance too, but apparently it's even more expensive than the usual ones...

    Thank you!!!!

  4. I think you need to speak to a proper insurance broker rather than one of the online companies. Try to find one near where you live so you can call in and actually speak to someone in person. You will hopefully get better service and advice that way.
    Just one other thought, could you contact your Italian provider and ask them to cover you here in the UK ? Some of these companies operate worldwide or have franchises so worth a try.

  5. Try speaking to BeMoto insurance

    I've heard good things and they seem to have a realistic/real world attitude from what I've seen and heard..

  6. As @dukesox said, speak to a broker or to a person at the relevant U.K. insurance company. Your circumstances are hardly typical so the web sites will be useless. Try to find out if you can get a proof of no claims letter from your Italian insurer. This will be a useful bargaining tool for you when you call. They are more likely to offer you some sort of no-claims bonus if you are already in possession of the proof.

  7. Do you get some sort of proof of no claims from your current insurers? Might be worth asking if they can supply it in English and if so, I bet the insurers over here won't even bat an eyelid.

  8. I found ducati insurance very good to deal with and for me they came up with a much better price than I was quoted anywhere else.

  9. Thank you, and thanks @dukesox ! I currently live in London, and I tried to look for some brokers... I can hardly find someone insuring motorcycles, could you please help me? Sorry, I feel so dumb, but my confusion is beyond anything else... Thank you so much!!

  10. When you do get through to an insurance broker they will inevitably ask you what quotes you've been given, alway knock around £70/100 off and see if they can match it! I think it's a game they like to play with you, either that or they're just too lazy to do the research themselves and expect you to do the leg work!

  11. Thanks for the advice. Do you know where I could find something like that, where I could speak face to face?
    Thank you so much!!!
