M900 1994 Engine Help

  1. None taken, davyd seems well capable of doing the job and was only asking for advice/experience a bit of reassurance,(also having a bit of craic and sharing his experience )
    Extra thorough? I always use the same level of workmanship on any job/engine I'm working on,that way it's done right,"familiarity breeds contempt" the engineers that design engines and give the correct torque settings/sequence do so for a reason,

    If you fancy a change in career send your cv to all the engine builders I'm sure you will be headhunted with your meticulous approach and obvious regard for engineering practice! Please don't tell me you work for a bike shop and have built more bikes than I've had hot diners,
    Now wind your neck in, this was about assisting someone not your ego!

Thanks for the answer re: engines worked on, due to your reply I better not comment further, but you really need to look in the mirror when it comes to assessing ego, i have only offered personal opinions to date, and you are perfectly entitled to yours as said earlier.

I'll repeat "I'm not offended" but when someone chimes in to a thread trying to be a smartarse about turbos when I was trying to offer good advice about the subject in question of course I wil retaliate ,you don't know davyd,s level of skill so to assume he has the knack or feeling for torque is absurd,
    I see you edited your thread to "over thorough " no such thing! Your either thorough or your not, fussy? Again not a word to use in engineering,there's right and wrong, no middle ground(with my work anyway!)
    Your chance of selling a bike through this forum had diminished,don't try "one carefull owner,well maintained "

  7. I'm sorry I upset you Martyducati and I think you have over-reacted, if you are going to start calling people smart-arses then there is no point in replying. The M10 post was meant in good humour but taking account of not knowing everyone who might read it, was probably uncalled for but I suggest you don't talk about my ability re: selling bikes or maintaining them until you are in a true position to judge me.

  8. Ahh! I'll get over it,and two boxes of hankies to dry my eyes is hardly over-reacting,the m10 post was unnecessary,as in it didn't help davyd in any way,
    I don't/can't judge without information and the fact YOU STATE you don't read manuals or follow certain accepted procedures when working on your machines can only lead ME to one conclusion

    Davyd!!!! Have you got that motor back together yet " ya trouble maker! You,s Derry WANs are always starting trouble!":smile:)
     
  9. I'm not sure where you read this but it wasn't within this thread - at least stick to what's been written rather than twisting and misquoting. Out of respect for Davyd, I won't reply again but please don't mistake my silence for agreeing with you Marty.

  10. ME starting trouble!!!!. I log on thinking great, a few of the lads have responded I'll be able to make a start.
    Seriously I've been around bike forums long enough to know things can kick off pretty quick, it's a man thing, what I don't want is for members who would like to post with some advice to not post because its a short fuse thread. I really appreciate the help I've been given, it's got me to the stage I'm at with the rebuild and I need more help.
    This is a fantastic site so please lads don't stop with the advice

  11. threads like this give me real encouragement and knowledge. I don't have the experience so all the opinions are good to read. please keep the suggestions and info coming even if opinions differ. I'm keen to see how this goes !

  12. So I fitted the front barrel and head, gudgen pin in and clipped in place new seals fitted and torqued down. I must say I had Wee grin on my face when done..I did the 3 stage torque system as suggested I also found an old post with a lot of the torquing figures in it and it also gave the 3stage figures.

    BUT when I went to do the top cylinder I checked the oil seals before building it up,(assembling) (that's the old brickie in me coming out haha) only to discover one missing so I'll be ordering that tomorrow. thanks again for your help IMG_7367.JPG

  13. Good job,it's not hard at all once you get stuck into it,you will no doubt find the missing seal when the new one arrives!check the bearings on the belt tensioners and rollers for smooth action before refitting,the bearings can be replaced,
     
  14. I don't have my Haynes manual to hand but I recall that there are differences in the torquing process / torque values (cannot remember which) between different ages or serial nos of engines - looks like you've got the job done any how.
     
  15. Oh, I will see if I can find out more about the different age or serial number torquing as I still have the vertical pot to do? Cheers.
    I just checked the bearings on the tensioner all seems nice and smooth thanks for that.
    I also looked at my invoice for my parts and The missing seal wasn't ordered. Buy it was today!!
    I must take a few pics tomorrow. I'm off to collect my daughter from the airport now, she's home to rob me for a few days..

  17. I see that the torque values have already been listed but as I said I would and I now have my Haynes in front of me here it is:
    For cylinder head nuts :
    1st stage 15Nmm
    2nd stage 30Nm
    3rd stage (900 engine with old type studs) 42 +- 1Nm
    3rd stage (all 600/750 engines and 900 with new type studs) 39 +- 1Nm
    Also refers to the need to re-torque after 100kms to 3rd stage setting.

  18. Well wifey was away, and my missing seal was delivered. So nothing else for it. IMG_7375.JPG New seal in place. IMG_7377.JPG Looking into the abyss IMG_7382.JPG IMG_7389.JPG Fitting the pin and clip. So far all is good IMG_7394.JPG barrels on more seals on heads on and torque up time. IMG_7391.JPG Belts next IMG_7396.JPG IMG_7398.JPG hopefully I've got this correct, lined all timing marks up and counted teeth. Transferred them to my new belts and slipped the new ones on. IMG_7399.JPG Turned the engine over by hand a few times and didn't hear or feel anything was adrift. Would I know if something was wrong at this point? IMG_7401.JPG This lot is going to the platers to tidy her up a little. IMG_7402.JPG Messy garage but I'm getting there.
     
  19. Looking good! Check your valve clearances at this stage,you'll never get better access!
     
  20. I may be wrong but if a torque wrench is attached to your head bolt spanner will it provide the "right" torque setting at the head stud. When the torque wrench "breaks" there will be less Nm at the stud because of the extra leverage?????? I think?????
