Mhr900 Garage Find

Discussion in 'Vintage' started by Derek, Mar 13, 2017.

  1. Through the Scottish Ducati Club I was recently asked to help an elderly lady assess the value of her late husband's bike as she was looking to sell it.
It turns out that it is a 1980 Mike Hailwood Replica, only of the early ones with the one piece fairing.
That bike has been laid up for 10 years or so after her husband had been knocked off it by a lorry when stationary.
After a succession of emails I eventually went to look at it last weekend. Here are a selection of photos showing the condition that it is in.

The brake lever is bent, there are score on the master cylinder at the pivot. The part of the twistgrip that engages the cables is missing.

    Mileage is 27,723 km.

Brake lever is bent but would be easily straightened

The red paint on the tank has some flaking above the logo but the tank itself is undamaged and internally is relatively rust free.

There is some scuffing on the lower fairing as a result of the accident with the lorry.

Flaking of the paint around the RH indicator. I don't know if this is a result of the damage and the indicator was subsequently replaced.

The bike has been stored in a dry concrete garage but all the alloy surfaces have light dusting of white oxidation which should polish off fairly easily. The RH Conti silencer isn't too bad but the LH one has rusted through at the rear.
The engine turns over freely and has good compression. I connected a battery and found that all the electrics work and it has sparks at both plugs.
The rear indicators and their bracket have been removed for some reason but they are all intact.
I don't think it would need much to get this bike going again. Oil and filter, new battery, new tyres and clean of the carb jets should get it running. Then it would be a case of restoration or conservation depending on how an owner wants to go.

I would take this bike on myself but I currently have 4 Ducatis with no room for another one. If any one is seriously interested in this bike drop me a PM. The bike is located in NE Scotland.

  2. Fantastic project for someone.

  3. Must resist, must resist, must resist...................

  4. I should also have added that the lady's husband was the 2nd owner of the bike, having owned it since 1982.

  5. No doubt any decent person would want the widow to get a reasonable price, without her being taken unfair advantage of. So were you able to form a view what a fair price would be? And is that something you would be able to share publicly @Derek ?

  6. Pete,
I have been reluctant to publish money until I had an idea what might be offered. But being realistic, roadworthy examples of these bikes are going for £10-£12K, fully restored ones for up to and beyond £20K. So even as a non-runner, which is in pretty fair condition, it must be worth £6-7K. As parts it would be worth at least that.
    Are you tempted? ;)

I sent you a private message.

  8. Derek,

    pm sent also

  9. Nice find Derek, I'd be jumping on that!
Not that many left of the early ones.
If only I was on your side of the world.

  10. For some reason the MHR does not seem to hold its value as well as a 900 SS of the same era, but I would say that the lower values mentioned should be the absolute minimum

  11. Made In Italy have a 1980 one fitted with a 900SS half fairing, OEM fairing and seat included - as near as dammit £17K.

  12. As it is an early one - is it one of the first 200? My mate had one of those, 1980 W plate as well as full one piece fairing. They are the ones in demand the most.

IMO given the rarity and condition, it should hit at least close to £10K, because some of the first 200 have reached over £22K when in pristine condition.

  13. Correction on prices - some not even in the first 200 are up for in excess of £25K, in fact one apparently has never been started and that is going for £26K.

  14. Ridiculous ... but true.

  15. Sold.

  17. BTW, this one isn't mine... so I've not bought and flipped it for a profit.

  18. It runs... :)

  19. Good news. I was wondering how you were getting on. Did you have to do much? I'd have thought a change of oil, clean out the carbs and a new battery would about do it.
