1198s Is Embarrassing Me!

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Pavey, Aug 7, 2015.

  1. My bike gets hot in the second part of my journey once i hit the London traffic, up to 105 degrees sometimes. What it has started doing now is revving itself up to around 2500 - 3000rpm at the lights, and while slowing down (so consequently the engine braking is reduced), which is damn embarrassing at the lights, and its not particularly quiet either.

I'm guessing the throttle or something related to it is sticking, is there an easy fix, like cleaning something?

I have just checked and the coolant expansion tank is plenty full enough, does this mean the rad is also full and i don't have to check it (not easy on this bike)?

    Thanks :)

  2. 105 should be ok.
The combination of the coolant mix and pressurisation of the cooling system means that boiling point should be delayed to close to 130C.
Ducati could set the fans to kick in earlier but they choose not to. My guess is that this is because any water in the oil due to condensation will still boil off at 100C, so reaching that temperature sometimes is a good thing.
Normal running temperature for my 3series diesel is 100c, so imho, this is not a temperature to worry about. Oil and components should easily be able to cope with it.

  3. As above, 105 degrees in heavy London traffic is common. I've seen 110 plus in Italy. The revving thing doesn't sound much fun though, dont know what that is? Temperature sensor perhaps? sounds similar to when engines run rich on startup??

  4. Just managed to get the air tube off and have a look in the rad and its full to the brim, which is a good thing i guess.

While coming to a standstill if i keep it in first and trundle along almost until it starts to judder, then the revs go very low and stay there. It's if i roll in neutral up to a traffic light that it sticks and then revs itself. Odd.

  5. Presumably this a fly by wire throttle?
If so @chrisw may well be the man you need...

  6. Funnily enough I have an Ecu on the way from the man himself, with a better map on it.

  7. Just as well it's not doing this with his ecu installed...

  8. This problem seems more like a dodgy sensor or loose wire so it might still do it?

  9. Mine revs higher when its rolling in neutral and my 899 did the same apparently they are built that way now so that if you are rolling to a stop and lights change you have less chance of stalling, this was all told to me before I picked up my 899 in November 2013 so it was one of the first 899's on the road and not a fault that was found after release.

  10. Does yours go to 2,500 to 3000 rpm as well?
That seems an awful lot for an anti-stall measure.

  11. About 2500 revs

  12. TPS reset done recently? Might be worth a try

  13. Thank goodness for helmets :)

    I feel ya embarrassment though
My SS would do the same until I had stem seals done and carbs balanced
The revving would rattle the whole bike prompting worrying glances from car owners
    I just waved :Bag:

  14. Is this an easy thing to do? I'm clueless.

  15. You'll either need the dealer to do or if you have Ducati Diag and the cables it can be done from a laptop

Quite easy but you need the kit. Anyway its a bit of a shot in the dark, hang on a little while and see if any of the more knowledgeable heads come on and either agree or tell me I'm talking bollocks

  16. I rode in today and it stated the revving thing again once hot (105 degrees) and when i got to my destination i turned the bike off and left the ignition on so the fans would keep running. Around a minute later i checked and they weren't running. Should they be with the ignition on but the engine off?

Maybe they aren't running while I'm riding, hence why it is getting hot and freaking out.

  17. Check your gauge once it drops below 103 the fans turn off.

  18. I am not sure diag will connect to the Mitsubishi ecu on an 1199

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  19. Shite is it a Mitsibushi ECU, see I shouldn't try & be clever its not in my DNA :Muted:

  20. Unfortunately yes it is, so far I have not been able to connect to mine yet :(
