1998 Yamaha R1 Worth?

Discussion in 'Other Bikes' started by Bazz, Jul 12, 2016.

  1. I am thinking of selling my Dad's 1998 Yamaha R1 which he given me, in red and white colour scheme, completely standard (other than double bubble screen). But i'm not really sure what its value is, ebay and auto trader is mixed with the pricing some low, others quite high in value. Would anyone know here what sort of value it may be? I've had some guy from car and classics get in touch with me, keen to help me sell it and reckons £6995 would be a good starting figure. Can any of you guys wade in and offer some help on that, is it a ridiculous amount or is that about right?

    22101 on the clock
    Part Service History
Original Hand book and service book
    Original tool kit
    Had all warranty recalls completed
    Early registration 01/03/1998
    Build/frame no# 1194
    Good condition

Not sure whether to put this in sale section but i'm unsure as to whether i want to sell it or keep hold if it.

  2. sounds a lot to me with the millage. Autumn 2014 I was looking for one and they were about £4k. Which Is why i bought a 996.

But whack it on Auto Trader or MCN, worse that happens is no phone calls or somebody offers a price too low and you say "no".

@Exige is pretty good with prices.

  3. mate, ive got one with 30K on the clock but totally stock and in good nick.
ive been offered £5K for it and declined.
i recon £10K written allover it in the next year or so . hold on to it for 12 months and sell it then if you need £££, but i would never sell mine (unless i will be up against it money wise)

  4. The ones with the Red seat were frowned upon and everyone bought blue - then when the 99 model came out most bought red/white as the red seat had gone. Now everyone thinks the red seat ones are worth more due to rarity. They are only rare due to the fact no one wanted them so not sure how that works. After time it becomes fact, and the red seat version go for approx. £1K more than the blue.
I would say £4K would be a good price for yours - but they are sought after, so if you put it on Ebay for 10 days at a high price like you suggest, you won't sell - but you will get plenty of watchers. Then switch to an Auction with no reserve and with the watchers already built up you will get the interest. It will then sell for what the current market dictates - my guess is £4K max, but you never know.
I paid £6K recently for a brand new, zero mile 4XV R1 (1999 model but the same as yours only the nicer colour ;))
Car & Classics? The free website for selling cars and bikes you mean?
The only other way to get top dollar is to try the Bike Specialists in Sheffield - they sell on commission and have a large clientele, some of whom would only buy from posh dealerships - they advertise at top dollar prices. Not sure they would take yours though with the mileage.

  5. i disagree .
i would say you will get 5K for it fairly immediately. (ive been offered 5k after 1 day on ebay before i changed my mind about selling) i just find very difficult parting with things.

  6. Yeah car and classics. He had contacted me 6 weeks ago as I posted a pic on an R1 facebook page, he was interested in buying it then as he had smashed his own up. Also said he was a massive fan of the original R1 and is trying to build a database base up of the first registration ones.

Now my bike insurance is coming up for renewal on the pani and my dads is ending on the R1 i thought i would find out the cost to insure it for myself and its coming out for at about £1200 and thats with 50 miles on the policy! just made me think can i justify spending that on something i'm not going to use? I suppose i could get my dad to insure it and pay his premium which is about £90. Or do i sell it, hence why i got back in touch with this chap who advertises on cars and classics and reckons he would be about to get between 6500 7k for it as he knows people who may be interested.

I have a split decision, one part of me is like sell it, other is like it might be worth a bit in years to come and my heart wants me to keep it as it was dream bike growing up as a lad. The my dad bought one and it was like he bought a ferrari to me back then :tearsofjoy:

Do you think it will go up in value if i keep hold of it? what do i need to do to make sure it does go up in value if i do keep it?

  7. Only one way to find out - stick it up on Ebay as suggested :) I've passed on at least 2 recently with similar mileage, but seen people asking more for sure.

  8. you can insure it against fire/theft but don't have it on the road.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  9. It will only go up in value - 5 years or so ago you could get them for £2500 :)

  10. ooooo not sure about that :tongueout:

  11. keep it mate, ive got a 99 red and white one boought for less than 2k 5 years ago and wouldnt sell it unless it was stupid money was offered. i think there a cracking looking bike nearly as nice as the 996 range.

  12. Mmm, perhaps they were all wrong at the time about the sissy red seat :Artist:

    :smileys:

  13. That's alright for you to say as yours is the nicer colour :)

  14. 30k miles and she looks like that??? IMG_0194.JPG

  15. pfff sissy red, it's the hot seat!

I think i'm gonna see what this chap says, if He can get what he thinks I'll let it go if not I'll just keep hold of it.

  16. You can ask what you want evidently: :D but it's true value will show on an auction - stick it up on Ebay and we will see ;) But if you don't need to sell then keep it, as suggested already.
I thought you said he was interested in buying it? Car and Classics is a free web site you just upload your ads to isn't it?

  18. That ebay add also got me thinking!

The guy wanted it about 6 weeks ago but I wasn't interested then and has since purchased another.

He acts as a dealer on car and classics and offered to sell I t on my behalf as he says he know people who may be interested.

I may just wack it on eBay and see if I get any takers like you say.

  19. Ewww look at those blue screws!
