748/853 Conversion

  1. hi chaps, not been on here for a while but due to a completely blown motor in my 748bp I've had to source a new engine but I'm having a few issues and wander if you guys might be able to suggest some answers.

I've got a motor that's had an 853 top end fitted so I'm having to get bits together that weren't on my old motor. I think I've managed most things but still haven't sourced an oil cooler. Is it a must, do I need one, it's not gonna be raced?

If so does anybody have one I can't find one anywhere except shot to bits ones on fleabay?

  2. Why not use the cooler off your 748?

  3. I ran my 853 for a couple of years without an oil cooler with no problems, I got an ecu chip from JHP, John has a choice he can write one for you, that's if you don't want to have it remapped by a specialist.

  4. If the engine has previously run with a cooler there will be a diverter plate above the oil filter, this will have to be removed if you run without the cooler.

  5. Mine was a bog standard 748bp with a blank over the bottom inlet/outlet. This motor has been run with one and it's pretty high spec and been raced so I figured I best try and get one on it.

I've been advised to get a new P8 ECU also which I've tracked down but not bought yet, would I have to update the chip in it or best get a chip designed, presumably that's the best scenario?

Not had much playing with big bite kits etc

  6. What expense do you want to go to , the standard ecu works fine with the right chip fitted, as I said, have it remapped professionaly or tell John Hackett at JHP what mods have been done and he will write you one to suit.

  8. I'm trying to keep the cost down as I've had to buy crank sensors and associated gubbins and still gotta get the belts fitted and a few other things but as it stands, once the belts are on she can go back in the frame, swap clutches and address the ECU and chip issues. Well that and an oil cooler which I'm struggling to find

  9. Not sure what cranker still has, he swapped his 853 out for an 1198 motor incl wiring and ecu. I'd tag him but he's banned.

  10. My son has a full race 748 spec engine built by CJS and he does not run an oil cooler. I also doubt you actually need a P8 ECU as the 748 can run quite happily on a remapped 16M ECU.

Why not ring him and ask, he has a lot of expertise in this area and is more than well acquainted with remapping Ducati's.

  11. I run an EVR 853 conversion in my track bike on a 1.6M ecu + an 853 eprom bought off this forum. I do use an oil cooler but have no idea how much difference it makes as the oil gets changed after every 3rd track day anyway. Andy

  12. 748 engine doesn't run the P8.... You can keep the stock 1.6M and change the chip...job done. P8 runs two flywheel sensors among other things and you don't have them.
