848 Intermittent Flashing Dash And Head Light

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by JasonHughes, Mar 23, 2016.

  1. As above, only had the bike since Monday but it's a 2010 848 10k mileage.

Went out for a little ride to get used to the feel of it, then the dash light started flashing on and off every so offer, and whilst that flashes the headlights also flash??

Took it out today for the same thing and it's still the same as above. And then the engine cut out after 1min of tick over? Is this normal? It's got Termis and Ecu etc

  2. Have a look at the R/R connector. These often burn out and cause these types of problems.

  3. There's a relay under the nose cone that is prone to Verdi Gris. It's a PIA to get at.

  4. Ok pretty new, just had to wire the back number plate light back in, 5 min job turned into an hour!!

What's the R/R ? And where abouts is the Relay? Easy to get at or? PIA?

  5. R/R = Regulator / Rectifier. It's under the battery on the LHS of the bike.

Headlight relay is screwed to the headlight bracket behind the nose cone, under the dash area. It's a nosecone off job.

By flashing dash, do you mean the main beam light is flashing or the back lighting of the display?

  6. Shall have a little look at that tomorrow with regards to the relay. Off the shelf job?

It's strange the back light on the dash flashes but the head light also flashes the same time.

Would try and grab a little video but it's not until the bike is up to temp id say or 10-20 mins into riding

  7. Chances are they fitted the battery when you bought it but didn't fit/tighten the earth strap correctly.

I had similar on my Hypermotard when the earth cable broke inside the sleeve at the crimp connector. Going over bumps the whole bike would momentarily die and the dash & lights go off, then come back on again. I only noticed the dash light going off when it was dark and figured out the battery feed was being intermittent. Luckily I could just put a new crimp terminal on and secure the battery correctly (even though mine had the "loose battery" recall!) and it's been fine for the last 5 years.

  8. An earth could be a good shout.

I doubt it's the headlight relay, as this does not control your dash backlight. It may be a case of the dash backlight and headlight cutting out rather than flashing, if that makes sense.

  9. The dash controls the headlight. So if the dash goes off so does the headlight.

  10. Think my first should would be to check the earth. Pretty new so where am I looking? By the battery? Not bad had it 3 days and the sode fairing has been off twice since

  11. I had a similar problem with my 1098 last year. Would start the bike and once warmed up the headlight would flash on and off and the bike would cut out. I checked every electrical connection and earth, swapped out all relays checked the stator and RR before someone on another Ducati forum suggested checking the flywheel as he had similar issues. So after months of head scratching I dropped it to a Ducati mechanic who confirmed it was in fact the flywheel that had worked its way loose, turns out the sprag clutch needed replacing too but I was reasonably lucky the threads on the crank were still intact. Its worth checking if all the simpler checks don't identity the problem

  12. Think I'll start with the Earth, then the relays and go from there. I've checked all the fuses yesterday and they all seem in good condition, no corrosion.

  13. Thanks guys, looks like I'll be busy this morning...
Here's a little pic of the pretty little thing

  14. Well ive checked the terminals and Theo all seep ok, sprayed with a little WD and a quick wire brush just incase but it only sometimes happens, haven't been out long enough since, had a little fuel leak on the fuel Union so changed that £10 odd from the dealers

Did notice this wore at the bottom which had been cut?

  15. And haven't a clue what this is??

  16. The cut wire looks like the sidestand switch connector. If it's not looped out well, could definately cause the bike to cut out. There should be a wire running from this connector through the holder (ringed) to the side stand switch.Strange that it looks to have been bypassed.

The thing you don't have a clue about is the starter solenoid.

  17. Isn't that the diagnostic cable connector? Can't remember now...

This is what it should look like
