Advice On Trackday Pressures .

Discussion in 'Tyres' started by DjM, Sep 14, 2016.

  1. Hi
Wondered if someone might have some advice on trackday tyre pressures .
I'm doing a trackday on Sunday at brands hatch on my 05 749 .
I'm currently running bridgestone BT016 PRO tyres that are about a year old .
Wondered what pressures to run , I was thinking 28 rear and 30 front .. any advice greatly appreciated .
( other than go buy Super Corsas lol )
    Thanks in advance

  2. These are reasonable cold pressures. Depending on what group you are in they will gain some pressure after the first session or two so make sure you check them when you come in each time. You want to see around 32f/30r when hot on road tyres, more powerful bikes usually run a bit lower on the rear but you'll be good at that I reckon, just let some pressure out if they go over that.

  3. Thanks for that .
I'm only in the novice group , my second trackday , the first time it was snow..sleet then rain at snetterton on the 300 circuit in April !!
But dried out by the last two sessions of the day lol .
I did struggle to get any heat in the tyres that day but I was going very careful as people were binning it all over the place.
Thanks for the advice it gives me something to head for .
I'm assuming check the pressures as soon as I get in the garage at the end of each session?

  4. Try not to worry about pressures too much on your first few track days. Just focus on being smooth, and getting the lines right.

Aslong as the pressures aren't hugely out, you'll be absolutely fine.

    Enjoy mate

  5. Novice group doesn't really stress the tyres much more than a fast road ride so as @Advikaz says dont worry too much, just enjoy the day. Personally I still advise checking them after the first few sessions in particular and early afternoon as it's easy gains for little work. As you get quicker having three or four psi too much through overheating can really make the bike feel jittery and will wreck a rear tyre.

  6. Thanks very much for the advice.
I will enjoy the day and keep an eye on the pressures and tyre wear during the day , see what happens lol

  7. Hi
Ok so I had my day at brands hatch and it was a fantastic day :grinning: .
So I run the tyres at 30 rear and 32 front when hot ( well as hot as I get them lol )
Here are the results attached pics ..
Do they look ok running at those pressures ?

  8. Good looking wear.

Not sure if it's just me or my eyes but looking at the build up on the grooves (rear) towards the edge makes me wonder about suspension?????

  9. Ok
What are you thinking maybe a set up correctly ?
Although I do believe the forks have been modified with bigger springs or something as I can't get the front sag to less than 21mm with me on it , and I think people aim for 30mm front .
Front did seem slightly understeering today but still loved the day

  10. There's a good to the point guide here:
Race Track Motorcycle Tyre Wear Guide - Types and Causes

There's a bunch of possibilities so I wouldn't like to say I know what I'm talking about but from the pictures:
Raised trailing edge that you have on the rear often indicates too fast rebound.
Raised leading edge that you have on the front often indicates too slow rebound.

Is there perhaps a bit of geometry tear from too much weight on the front?

  11. Thanks for the link , I'll have a look at that and see what I can see .
To much weight on the front .. err I try not to lean on the bars to much and hold myself with my legs under braking .
Not sure what else I can do about that .
Maybe an idea to have the bike's suspension set up professionally ?

  12. Definitely worth getting the suspension setup, it makes a massive difference and pays for itself in tyres if you're on track. Paul Goodall who used to work at Snell Performance does mine, he's near Southampton and very good:

  13. Thanks Alot
I'll give them a call and see why they have to say

  14. Hey
Curious, is this for ALL tyre brands? Thing is I have BT016s on my GSXR and their cold pressure is WAY higher than the Pirelli's on the Duc's. So when hot, should one be looking for 32/30 regardless of make, or should this be changed depending on brand?
    Thanks

  15. They can vary quite a bit best to check on the manufacturer's website. These are Parkitts recommendations

  16. OK, so for my Pirelli Rosso II shod 999 on Monday, let the tyres go cold after riding there during sign on/briefing and just set 30/30.

    Thanks @Tobytyke

  17. With my BT016 pro tyres all I can say is the advice I was given by the guys on here was great 30 32 hot and that was at brands hatch on my 749.
By the third lap and they were upto temp it felt very planted and a very confidence inspiring feel .
I checked the pressures cold the the next day and they were at 26 and 28 , surprising how much they increase in pressure on the track .
    Hope that may help alittle

  18. Should be about right, just check right after the first session.

  20. Your tyres look fine to me. I'd have no issues about using those on the road for a few thousand miles more.
