Define "smart". If I was able to lead the World's media and a chunk of the American voting public on the merry dance that Trump has been doing - probably purely for the shits & giggles, then yes - I'd be smarter than Trump.
How's about: Being the type of person who doesn't allow themselves to be influenced by self-seeking arseholes like Trump. I realise that this definition excludes a large chunk of the voting American public.
One thing Trump is not is stupid. You don't get to be the sort of person who can buy his way to a presedential nomination by being dumb. What he is, though, is egotistical, bigotted, racist, sexist, manipulative, and dangerous. He's smart enough to know that scapegoating a minority (muslims in his case) resonates with the brain-dead red-neck nutcases who will vote for him to stop the "pinko commie socialist liberals" getting elected and creates enough paranoia in other people to win a few votes from the middle ground too. His tactics mirror, quite closely, those of Nazi Germany. If the Americans elect this guy it's not just the USA that will suffer - it will have a disasterous effect on the rest of the world too...
His business acumen is over rated too, if he had invested the "small loan of a million dollars" in gold and sat at home scratching his bum ever since he would be considerably wealthier than he is now. Probably more respected, too...
While I think you are correct in everything you wrote and I whole heartedly agree with you, I'd just like to point out that, even if he is elected to president, he will still be a bell-end.
