Help Identifying A Piston Manufacturer

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Android853sp, Jan 9, 2017.

  1. I'm fairly sure I asked this question 18 months ago but the forum search function isn't throwing anything up. I have 2 pairs of high compression 748 pistons from the pallet of ex Monster Mob spares I picked up in 2015 that I would like to identify. The only distinguishing mark in the casting of the pistons is an uppercase M where the right hand leg of the M is slightly longer to make it the leg of a P. Anyone have an idea ? Thanks, Andy

  2. Perhaps a picture might help to distinguish what make they are.

  3. Challenging as it is under the gudgeon pin on the underside of the piston. I'll try and get something but I've only got a phone camera. Andy

  4. Just a stab in the dark - they are Italian but don't seem to specialise in bikes too much...
    Home -
    Meteor Piston

    • Thanks Thanks x 1

  5. An "M" suggests they were possibly manufactured by Mondial. They are listed by Ian Falloon as one of the manufacturers of forged pistons for Ducati.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1

  6. It's also amazing that nowadays a couple of pints cost as much as a television camera.

  7. Mondial pistons were definitely used in customer 888 motors factory bikes always had Omega, unsure if that continued on to the 748, however I have seen a few 748 race motors with Mahle pistons

  8. You are the second person to identify Mahle so I have sent them an email. Cheers. Andy

  9. IIRC the Mondial piston company were acquired by Mahle and so are now one and the same?

All the Mondial pistons I've seen have 'Mondial Piston' cast/stamped into the inside of the skirt, certainly the old pistons I took out of my Guzzi have, along with a Mondial 'logo'.

  10. This is the best photo I can do

  11. For me thats almost certainly a Mahle Powerpak piston

  12. I spoke to Frank Wrathall Developments in Preston who built the original engine but sadly records of the builds are no longer available. The engine builder, Ian, remembers that the superbike used Omega pistons but most of the 748 parts were supplied direct from Ducati so I'm no nearer. Hopefully Mahle will reply to my e-mail.

  13. worse case scenario:

JE will re-manufacture the pistons for about £180 each. You'd need to obviously send them the piston and they only do batches of 4

  14. Spoke with the workshop guys and the pistons are the same manufacurer as the stock 916 and early 996 supplied by Ducati. Most likely manufacturer is Meteor Pistons in Italy.
Thanks for that but I have 2 new pairs of hc pistons and barrels so don't need any more. Was looking to identify things so they are accurately described when they go up for sale. Andy

  15. Had a reply from Mahle today and it's not one of theirs but they suggest it is most probably made by Mondial as has already been suggested. Thanks for all the input. Cheers, Andy
