Ducati 996, 916, 748 | eBay Went to have a look at this 996 today. Looks really clean with just a couple of blemishes, one on the carbon mud guard and one on the leading edge of the carbon mono seat unit where it looks like it's been clonked with a boot. The seller is an ex racer who seems to know his stuff. It's based on a Bip but has many bits from other models as can be seen in the ad. I'll obviously be checking that it's never been written off, but does anyone have any thoughts on it. He's got it on for 5 and rejected an offer of 4.3 last week. Been thinking about things and if I'm commuting a few thousand miles a year, do i really want to pay more for an absolutely mint, collectors item....
It's far from Standard mate 848 front end by the looks of it. To the purest it would not be worth as much as a standard one. Make sure he has the original parts.
1098 forks actually, and 848 wheels. He's got the original wheels, exhausts and clocks but not forks. Things like different forks are always a bit suss, so as I say, I'll be checking the history. He was very open about what isn't standard though.
Looks like a good bike though mate. If your going to ride it like it should be ridden, if it was me personally I'd rather go for a standard bike. Unless you can get it for a good price of course. But if you like it go for it.
Well it's going to get quite a few miles on it probably, so paying extra for a fully kosha one seems a bit daft. As long as it's not a post-crash rebuild and it all works.
Whether it's been down the road or not, it definitely "looks" like a bitsa.I wouldn't buy it unless it was seriously cheap, which it isn't. I'd go for a standard machine, you'll always have to explain the stories when you come to sell this bike.
well that's true. But to be honest, most of the bikes I've had have been altered in some way and I've never had any hassle selling. As long as you're honest from the outset and just sell the bike as what it is, people will be interested. Not everyone, admittedly, but then not everyone is picky about everything being original. Although I'm learning that this tendency is more prevalent among ducati people. Must be a relative rarity/value thing.
Because of the fork and wheel change he has had to go for the digital dash as there is no front wheel speedo drive. Could have done a better job mounting it though, but that can be improved. The mods make sense and it's better than some I have seen on eBay recently. If you are local I'd check it out, HP!? and then go and have a look at it. It wouldn't be impossible to get it back to a standard bike especially if most of the stock bits came with it. Here's a dashboard mounting bracket made by someone on this forum for ideas. Carbon sheet can also be used.
Cheers Red, He did mention the lack of Speedo drive thing. I went to see it and it really is a very neat bike. Unless you know what you're looking at, it doesn't look like a "special". There's no mish mash of screw heads or bits of loom wrapped up in electrical tape. I'll take a closer look at the dash mount, but my job means knocking up something better shouldn't be a problem. I'll obviously check the status of the bike, but the chap came across as very straight and was happy to explain why things had been changed. He certainly wasn't trying to bullshit.
Here's a nicely made speedo sensor holder for the back wheel. If you are happy with his replies then you could see if you could get him down a bit on the cash front. Surprised he kept the older style panels as the newer ones may have been more in keeping with the mods he has made to the rest of the bike.
I'll definitely be haggling a bit. The side panels are carbon, which might explain why he kept them. Apparently the previous owner had the idea of making his "ultimate race rep", hence the later forks which allow radial brakes.
Could be a good buy then if you don't mind\want a totally stock bike and complete originality is not an issue.
