  2. Yes all true boys , glad it winter and not summer , glad when I am away working and glad I got a guru just doin the road !! So not all bad

  3. A
ll very well if I had enough time , resources and half enough knowledge !!! Thanks anyway mate

  4. I would test the pump and wiring inside tank first.

  5. I wasn't going to start listing all the possibilities Keith so as not to confuse but the ECU swap/reconnect test takes a fraction of the time compared with pump and tank!

  6. Derek will sort it out.

  7. If there is a spare to check with

  8. if you had been down this way you could've tried out one of mine, we are friendly like that in the south you know,;) in the past have had several offers to even post me an ECU in the past. Even an unplug/plug back in test is worth doing but I appreciate if it doesn't come easy to you then best leave to an expert.

  9. I expect even an " expert " will need to have the spare one . And that is where it will be going

  10. Quite possibly, shame you're so far away (I think)

  11. Him being far away has it's advantages ;)

  12. Yep indeed , thanks for offer anyway

  13. He may not live near you, @Chris but he does live near Derek, so he should be sorted in time for Spring.
Sadly, no 'experts' I'm aware of near me in Devon. :(
I'd really like to get my valve clearances optimised and the one independent specialist in the area is no longer trading, having been headhunted by Hel. :/

  14. Going by a conversation that we had, and by your response to threads on here I know that you are being modest J. With the help of people on here I'm sure you can do it yourself and will enjoy it at the same time :) they are a lot a lot easier than the previous DesmoQuattro heads to work on when it comes to inspecting and setting valve clearances. I think there are even some decent tutorials on YouTube that are worth looking at.

  15. You are very kind, Chris.
As you suggest, it probably isn't totally outside my capabilities. However, I'm not enormously confident about it and also have the impression that to do the job properly, you really do need to have a full set of shims available and should use the same micrometer when measuring both the shims coming out and the ones to replace them. I don't even have a micrometer.
It's not so much the spanner work that worries me, I'm sure I can cope with that. It's the calculations and precise measurements that I find off-putting.

  16. Old rider, if your bike is mobile drive it to Louigi Moto, Rich may be able to do it whilst you wait or get you onto a bus route to Bath railway station (Chris has done this for me when I dropped the 748 off for heavy service a couple of years ago). I hope to see him soon for mine to include a service, suspension and engine set up and a remap.

  17. Thanks, Denzil.

I have considered this. They are quite well to the south of Bristol, so no more than an hour and a half from me in Exeter. The bike is absolutely fine, so no problem there.
However, as I understand it, the motor needs to be stone cold to get accurate measurements, so really needs to be left overnight before work can be started.

If I could get there early enough for it to cool down sufficiently for the work to be done same day, that could work well. Maybe I could drop it off the afternoon/evening before and get bed and breakfast close-by. That would be much simpler than trying to get back to Exeter and then back to the workshop to pick it up again

Steve R is not a million miles from me and is something of a valve guru - he has pretty firm views on how valves should be set up. I did pm him to see if he would be prepared to set my valves up according to his preferred specs (on a professional basis) but sadly he failed to respond.
