Sp5 Import?

Discussion in '851 / 888' started by RON, Jan 21, 2017.

  1. Looks like he works in recruitment in advertising. Knowing people who do both it can be silly money. Could see a guy in that role having the bonuses to throw at classic Ducati if he wanted too.

  2. There was 2 on Car and Classic back end of last year advertised for £14k both on there for months and months, I know one is still for sale. I've never seen one sell for over that. But I'm sure if one in exceptional condition with low miles and fully serviced came along it would sell but it would probably be from a specialist dealer like Made in Italy not a private sale with no warranty and for a bike that hasn't been ridden for 8 years.

  3. You're dead right it depends on condition and history and that's one of the pitfalls of the SP5 in that there are not lots but plenty of false copies, especially with the SP0 out there making things worse. I track sales of these so I can update my insurance agreed value.
Ron, if it's Jack selling the SP5 it'll be a proper bike. He had one of every sp from the 851 Tricolore right through to the modern stuff in his collection. I don't think they'd got ridden much but he had the earl deal in all of his bikes. It was a dream collection, I guess just too big to sell to a single collector? The bike will be genuine, the question will be how much work it needs to recommission after being stood, but given how infrequently a good SP5 comes up for sale it may be well worth the punt....

  4. Yup, looks like it's a good un and genuine UK. just need to verify servicing after 5th seeing as first speedo showed 12k miles before changed to MPH.

Seller sent me this, looks like he had a really nice set of bikes:

It is a UK bike. It was delivered on 28 May 1993 by Greens of Langton in Stoke on Trent.
Greens did the first service(585 miles) on 4/9/93.
    2nd service Greens (627miles) 13/11/93
    3rd service Greens (902 miles) 17/7/94
    4th service Greens (1201miles) 15/1/95
    5th service Greens (1951 miles) 21/10/95

It was imported new by Moto Cinelli ( as where all UK Dukes) and they changed the speedo at Greens i02/08/1999

Don't know why but all MOT's support that.

  5. The eBay ad says the clocks were changed in 2003 not 1999.

Why was it serviced twice in 1993 and twice in 1995.

Not being picky but if I owned and had bought a bike like an SP5 I'd know it's history like the back of my hand.

  6. The guy is renowned for his collection of Ducati's (see link above) and when I saw his original interview years ago he didn't seem to be an anoorac. More a fella who had lots of cash and likes bikes. With that much wealth (at a time when values were lower maybe) he probably didn't care. He also probably had people to find things for him :)

  7. My 89 851 is a uk bike and left the factory with kpm clock,it still has it but with mph decals for mot,

  8. Friend of mine bought an early 916SP, official import from a UK dealer and it had Kmh speedo. I think Ducati just used what stock they had/could afford and we just took whatever bikes were available.

I'd imagine things were just as chaotic during the 851/888 years...

  9. If I remember a conversation I had some years ago with a Parts man correctly, in the early days and as late as the 916 and 748 era, UK dealers were expected to change European spec parts like the speedo and the headlight prior to delivery to the customer. Just easier for Ducati to build one spec and send the different spec parts along with the order. Andy

  10. Hello

FWIW, I bought an 851 SP3 about 13 years ago from John Hackett (now Ducati Coventry). The bike was supplied to the (one) previous owner by Moto Cinelli in 1991 and it had a mph speedo fitted. The folks at JH were able to confirm that the bike was a genuine SP3 by contacting Italy.

  11. As stated previously all SP models left the factory with KM clocks... reason for this is because there is no such thing as an official UK SP model, although you could buy one they were never intended to be sold officially in the UK
