What Oil Should I Get

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by JdirectorJ, Apr 5, 2017.

  1. Hello,
I have a 2014 Monster 1200S and looking for the best oil and viscosity. Any suggestions?

    I used the motul 300V 15w50 with my old 2010 696.

    I live in New York.

    Help!

  2. I use Putoline Nanotech 15w50 in my 1098 Streetfighter on the recommendation of the Ducati specialist workshop who blue-printed the engine.
They build and race Ducatis from bevel drives to Testastrettas and say that oil offers the best protection under heat and stress for my engine. That's good enough for me.

  3. If you race it, keep it in a heated garage and only ride in summer, that should be perfect.

I don't ride in Winter but have an unheated garage and don't race, so use Motul's top ROAD oil, which is 7100 10/40 but each to their own.

Any decent fully synth will probably be fine

  4. Look in your manual for the viscosity recommendation, this will be based on the ambient temperature for your location.

Go for a fully synthetic oil, of the recommended viscosity, from a front line manufacturer such as Castrol / Shell / Motul / Q8 / Fuchs etc All these manufacturers will produce oil that is inline with the OEM requirements.

This being based on your engine being reasonably standard and used mainly for road use.

Avoid unknown own brands that "may" come from spurious sources.

Above based on 20 years of sales and marketing in the oil industry.

  6. As long as you use the right grade of oil the manufacturer recommends then any manufacturer will do.

Some try and make oil a dark art but there are only two things to keep your bike happy

1 use the correct grade oil according to the manufacturer (unless you have had engine tuning work, then ask the tuner for advice)
2 change it regularly, it's cheap enough to do

  7. Ok thanks everyone. Prob going with mobile 1.
