Who To Refurb Wheels?

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by Ash34, Oct 30, 2017.

  1. Who can refurb some wheels for me and use the original Ducati paint colour?

  2. Image Design Custom in Camberley, Surrey. Refurbished both my sets of 1098R wheels and have the colour match in their data Base. Andy

  3. I know them, they did some bodywork for me a few years ago but I didn’t realise they could do Wheels.

  4. Not 100% certain but the metal work might be farmed out and they finish the job. I made a mistake with my wets and put tyres on too early, paint needs time to harden. Left the second set a couple of weeks before shodding with rubber and no issue. Andy

  5. Can they do the red line round the wheel also??

  6. Would you go paint over powder coating?

  7. There has always got to be one . Andy

  8. Well....it is painted on there....ive often thought when i my evo sp's wheels get to that time...if it can be done....ie to make them look identical....

  9. Depending on the condition of the powder coating, you might choose to have the wheel powder blasted, anodised and then either wet painted or powder coated. The 1098R is wet painted as standard. Andy

  10. I have a pair down at the powder coaters, should be collecting on Thursday (hopefully)
The wheel condition was immaculate to start with so very little prep required.
I think the wheels currently on the bike are wet painted, a few chips appeared so hoping the powder coating is harder wearing

  11. What does this cost per wheel? Painting & powder coating?

  12. Powder coating is 60 for both wheels.

  13. Depends on the colour you choose, the preparation required, the type of wheel and your chosen supplier. Plain colours are cheaper, TPCS charge more for a SSSA rear wheel, I think my Mag Alloy Marchesinis were £80 F vs £120 SSSA R. My 1098R wheels were £300 a pair but that was fancy ding dong paint. 14. Not a big fan of powder coating on wheels... I would anytime go Acrylic or Polyurethane route.

  15. Fine. Perhaps you would post a useful link to somebody who offers these services and performs them reliably.

  16. Unfortunately do not know anyone that i could recommend...as never had issues with wheels.
Soon will have to look into it, because my VTR sp2 wheels have been powder coated white(previous owner :expressionless:) and they have plenty of chips.
The reasons I do not like powder coating.
    -difficult to remove.
-there can be damages under the layer and aluminium/magnesium can oxidate without being able to notice.

The are different grades of Acrylic paint..I would go 2 layers of hard option clear lacquer followed by 2 layers of more elastic top coat.
This is what we are using on our products. Not motorcycle related but sometime exposed to elements.

Just my opinion there are pros and cons for both ways.

  17. iirc Lepsons charge £120 per wheel and the wheel needs to be fully stripped of ancillaries (bearings etc) for that price.

  18. There is a UK wide franchise called "The Wheel Specialist". Did some car wheels for me a few years back and I was more than satisfied with the refurb and I'm sure they can do bike wheels too.
