Is it ok to use 10W/40 or even 15W/40 oil in an older 900?

  1. Grrr bloody tree huggers!

  2. Shell advance for me ........clunge,the new clutch

  3. Glad you piped up on above Spike as was thinking the same but couldn't remember the details.

  4. Well i always used 10-40 for winter. In summer same or one level up in thickness. I did notice bike using more oil on 10-40. Funny thing is it mostly does not burn... No idea where it goes. It smokes a bit on 10-40 when cold and only for about 1 min max. On warmer days 8 and up 30s smoke max. On thicker no smoking in general.

  5. Just to mess with all the opinions on this thread........

When I first got the SS, I did an oil change (10/40 Silkolene) after some mechanical repairs.......and I wasn't sure whether the engine had suffered more damage than I could identify during the repairs, so for the hell of it I added half a can of Wynns Oil Treatment (or was it STP?) treacle that I had left over.

.....4000 miles later and an oil change to 10/40 Silkolene straight, no problems in another 3000 miles......so it might just get some more at the next oil change.

  6. I can get lots of Crisp And Dry for free, would that be ok to use?

  7. you will only cook the engine

  8. Now this IS getting silly, you all should know by now that only Italian virgin olive oil should be used. i think they still do a 20w-50?

  9. I don't know any virgins between 20-50, let alone Italian ones.

  10. That's because Berlusconi gets to them first........apparently..

  11. l would not use stp or any oil thickener in anything it's just a bodge
if your engine needs anything of this ilk it needs a rebuild
check out bob is the oil guy.com for more info -
l have used any middling semi or full synthetic for years no bother
    regards Steve B

  12. Yep Steve....dead right, it's a thick oil, but the minute it has got hot, it never really gets thick again, even when cold......and I didn't use it as a bodge other than to top up the 10/40........none in there now though, and I do have nice high comps without it.

My Guzzi (yeah OK, tractor engine) always had a can of the stuff in it......from first oil change.....

I also use it when building engines......stops main bearing and big end shells falling off the crank; plus it means that bearings etc, aren't dry when turning over during the build and on first start up.
