Since records began?

  1. The met office are saying 2012 was the wettest year since records began, given that the planet is estimated to be 4.5 billions years old is 100 years of recorded weather data enough to make claims that this is extemely unusual or is it just nature doing what it does?

  2. Nah 2012 was just showery compared to 2000.

The met can't even get the weather right after the event..........

  3. If you recall up to March we had a drought, with hosepipe bans. So I believe 2012 has been the wettest drought since records began.

  5. Some bloke called Noah may just disagree with that..........

But let's look at the situation a little closer.............a large number of towns and cities are built on flood plains.................

....well, if they are flood plains, how did they get there?

That's right......they flooded, regularly over a very long period of time........why are people surprised when they get flooded again?

There are ditches across the whole of the UK..........the majority are historical features........how did they get there?

Some unfortunate b*ggers had to dig them.......Why?

Because there was a lot of water to dispose of.

Up until the Environment Agency came along, the rivers were regularly dredged and kept clear of obstacles....The capacity of rivers today is hugely reduced by silt and collapsed banks......Some rivers only have a third of the capacity they had thirty years ago.......(my old man worked for a River Authority)

Some ditches in my area are over seven feet deep and ten feet wide (or more)....

...No farmer in Victorian times or earlier reluctantly paid men to hand dig a ditch like that for no reason..............I reckon that applies to most ditches.

If those ditches and watercourse aren't maintained, it is hardly surprising that if we get a bit of heavy rain, it cannot get away..........

Notwithstanding the fact that estate developers do the right thing and install large capacity drainage to ensure they comply with requirements, only for their drainage to be connected to 'ancient' drainage systems that are already under - capacity.
