Low miles

  1. I've only got one bike, and I don't own a car. I use my Multistrada 1000 for going to work and fun rideouts - the ride to work is around 50 miles a day. My bike's got 28,500 miles on it (05 plate) which makes around 4,000 miles a year (it had 6,000 miles on it when I bought it three years ago). When looking for trade ins recently, dealers indicated that 20,000 miles was high for a Ducati of that age. Eh?

  3. +1 here for the multi bike theory. I’ve done 3.5k on my Hyper, 6k on my ST1300, 1k on my DT200 and bugger all (litterally ) on my 2 project bikes.
     
  4. I bought a cbr fireplace thingy for Mon to Fri, then I realized I needed a Ducati 1198S for a couple of hours on a Sunday

  5. If you were buying a bike of that age and mileage from that dealer, he would say 20K miles is nothing, virtually brand new, hardly run-in ...

  6. I reckon most people buy Ducatis (or other top bikes) and then realise what they will cost to service them with a main dealer.......

    ...so they hardly get to the first main service mileage before they get disposed of.....

    My '97 SS was first registered in Burton-on-Trent, since then it has been to Hampshire, Sussex and Kent; then to me in Suffolk.....

    ...IIRC I am the ninth owner. It has got just over 30K on the clock and I put 7000 on it.

    Excluding me, that means the average mileage per owner is approx 2900 and the average period of ownership is 12 months........

    So that to me means they get fed up with it in a year or they can't afford to run it......However, as mine had been b*ggered about with (quite a lot as I identified when cleaning it up) and I was handed loads of receipts for new parts, it was also laid up for quite some time, therefore some owners may not have owned it that long.

  7. Had a bike dropped off this morning - the driver had a couple of beemers in the back for export. One was a 61 plate. He said that when they came out, they had six months of deliveries, then six months of collections when people realised they'd bought something beyond their capability.

    Interesting - wonder who the Ducati dealer was in B O T ? Jacksons ? used to work there in the mid 80's ......
     
  11. I dunno.......The number plate gives no clues either.

    Although I do have relations (sort of) in B O T....not that that means anything.

  12. The 1198 I bought in October had 1400 miles and was an 09. Personally I do about 3-6k a year depending on trips and weather, but now with a young family I may be doing less this coming year but got some points in the bag over winter ! I also have multiple bikes, a burgman 250 for work and a KTM 400exc for the mud so get my fix in other areas aswell as the road/track.

  14. I did 17 years in the trenches, riding everyday from South to Central London in rain, shine, hail, snow and frost. Now, biking is my pleasure passion (I wear a uniform and carry luggage to get to work so biking is impossible particularly in the 50 deg summer heat). However, I ride whenever I can and still do road trips. I clock up about 10,000 miles a year on the several bikes I own.
     
  15. There was a time when I used to do a thousand miles a week dispatching, but I'm very much a leisure rider these days (although I ride all year round as long as it ain't raining). Low mileage doesn't hurt a bike as long as it's used regularly. Sadly my riding hasn't fared quite as well as my bikes:frown:
     
  16. my Ducati has very low miles and doesn't get much use

    Reasons

    3 or 4 crap summers in a row

    Unless I have somewhere specific to go I usually have a 1001 other things to do and it stays in the shed, lack of any local ducati or decent bike meets locally doesn't encourage give me a reason to get out on it

    Would like to take it accross the ditch to europe but have never found contact details of any Ducati bike rallies over there

    If there was a decent active Ducati social scene locally I would probably use it a lot more than I do

    Have seriously thought about selling the bike because it is not being used and buying something that had a better social scene / owners club network

  17. Are you not allowed to hang around with owners of other brands if you have a Ducati?

  18. Is your riding really that dependant on other riders / owners?

    Serious question, as literally 99% of my miles are done on my own. And I like that. I find other bikes are a hassle a lot of the time. It's good to meet up with folk and have a run around every so often but if you have to work round folk it's a pain.
     
  19. you entirely missed the point of my post, unless I have something to actually go to I have 1001 other things to do and the bike tends to stay in the shed

    I'm similar so I understand that but luckily can go out midweek which works fine. I just thought you were meaning the lack of a social side was stopping you too.
