Lowering Link And Battery Concerns

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Chris620, Dec 18, 2017.

  1. Hi All! New here!
Wanted a Ducati Monster since I was a kid and finally got round to buying a 2003 620 yesterday. Extremely happy with my purchase, it has BOS cans which sounds amazing!

Anyway, I have two issues I was hoping one of you lot would be able to assist with. I have already done a search of this and many other forums but I am struggling to find the information for my exact bike.

I am SHORT. Very short. 5'2" with a low inseam. I cannot get both feet to touch the floor at the same time even on the very tips of my toes, so I'm going to lower the bike as task number one of many. I am already searching for someone to lower the seat (if there are any recommendations on here i'd appreciate it).

I cannot find the adjustable rear link I need for the 620. Would a link from another monster, the same year, be a suitable fit? I've seen a couple knocking around for 750's?

Secondly, my garage has no power as it is in a block - a huge pain in the backside. As this bike is going to be a project 'till the summer, what's my best way of keeping the battery in check? is it worth removing the battery and putting it on a maintenance charger in my home? Or, just jump the bike every time I need to use it? (Would this cause immobiliser issues?)

Appreciate any advice you can give.

    Cheers
    Chris

  4. You can adjust the height, trying to remember if it’s via a tie bar or not on the later 620. Does it have a bar?

I know it can be because I raised mine on my race bike. The older ones are easier with the loop bar.

Remember if lowering rear you need to reduce front too, for balance, as it will be odd to ride otherwise.

  5. Re battery, I’d be inclined to remove and store somewhere warmer if you have the option.

  6. Thanks for the response. It is a bar but non adjustable. I've seen ones from same year but different engines which are adjustable. Was wondering if that would fit a 620 as its not advertised as such.

  7. Iirc a 916 one fits, as does some 916 shocks btw. I had a Showa one reworked on mine, with different valve etc it was very good.
    ovks

  8. Welcome along pal!

  9. Ducati tend to share parts songoid bet it will fit if from same type of frame/swingarm eg an older monster and 851 an interchangeable, as is a 900ss alli swingarm and monster (iirc).

Check our ducatisportingclub.com and have a look in their Desmo due section as I remember there was a list of interchangeable parts by bike put together (may be in technical or somewhere else on the site) :upyeah:

  10. Just get one of these (other makes are available), charge it at home, and carry it with you. If the bike ever fails to start on account of a flat battery, attach the emergency device and get going.

  11. Hello Chris:)! Congrats on the 620! I also have a 2003 620 that I bought in September. The guy before me let it sit for a long time and had to jump start it so I could take it out for a test ride. Took it home and the battery was still too weak to start. I took it off the bike and charged it overnight. It's been fine ever since but I have ridden it at least once every few weeks. Now that winter is settling in, I won't be riding for the next few months so I will put a battery tender on it to top it up, maybe once a month. They last a lot longer if they aren't allowed to go dead.
Did you get all the keys with your bike?

  12. Hi! Yeah got 3 keys in total i believe. Was quite shocked to receive them all.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I inspected the bike in daylight yesterday, and it turns out it already has an adjustable rear link! From my research that isn't standard. Going to have a go a lowering it this weekend as currently its impossible to ride! (well, not impossible but difficult coming to a stop)

    Cheers

  13. Good news. Remember to go the front too,,,

  14. Apologies for the light derailment OP but I think I you’ve got your answer -welcome btw.

Pete is this a specific model you’ve got and had success with? How long do they hold the charge for approx? Ta.

  15. Assuming the a is one of the jump start packs that is small enough to fit in your tank bag, mike used one for ages with his stupid lithium battery (£200) that families to start on cold mornings for trackdays and racing (fact not opinion) and used one with great success. It would work all weekend (so maybe a dozen starts) and still do phones and stuff at the end. To make it easier, it’s worthditting a cable with a connector (like optimate one) so you can just hook it up otherwise it’s a pita to get at the battery.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  16. Won't that overheat the rather flimsy optimate type cables that are not intended to take anything like this load?

  17. Take the battery inside deffo and top it up once a month as a minimum - and welcome!

  18. Oh, and El T is your best bet for the height advice - he was a bit grumpy earlier as you are taller than him :)

  19. Hi Chris, you need to replace the suspension tie rod with an adjustable one of one of the other models. Part no. 875.1.038.2A from an M900ie, M1000Sie, M4R, MS4R, S2R or S2R1000 should do the trick. Also fitted to ST2, ST4, ST4s, ST3s.

  20. I didn’t mean use that one, I meant it’s a cable thing like that one! Ie you can simply plug it in rather than remove seat or bodywork : unamused:
