848 Insurance

  1. There was definitely an advert in MCN this week from MCE. Said they would cover modifications for no extra cost.

I'm 52, 9yrs protected NCB, full licence since I was 17. Unfortunately I had a minor spill August 2010 and a scooter nicked February 2011. Thought I'd state that lot to put the following into perspective.

Insurance is such a lottery. I've always found Carol Nash and Ducati insurance very expensive and yet others, above, say they get the best prices. A company I have used is H & R who were very good for whatever bike I had then. Currently I'm with MCE who keep giving me the best price. Previously I had a speed triple, insured for about £240. Changed to the 848, now £500.

I always use comparison sites. Check loads of companies with one entry of a hell of a lot of detail. One thing I've found though. When renewals come through they are often a lot more expensive than the previous, first year with an insurance company. However, go onto a comparison site and your current insurers will often come up cheapest. The difference? You're taking out a new policy rather than renewing one. I was speaking to an insurer who explained that this can happen. I asked, so why can't you give me the price I can get buying a new policy, as I'm here talking to you. Doesn't work like that. What a load of bollox! Rant over...

I've found a slightly lower quote, on the back burner for this year, bikesure.co.uk.

Be careful starting a quote online and then phoning the company and quoting reference numbers. My brother did that when he had a problem online. Ended up with two insurance policies, same company, same bike. The eventually refunded one policy price but it took bloody ages. As it always does when they're giving us money. Rant is really over this time...

  2. This is exactly what I've just had. Got some quotes and flung that I could insure my new car, on a new policy, with the same insurer for £100 cheaper than the policy on the old car. This was even though the new one was 2 groups higher. Phoned the insurers to change to the new car and they then wanted an extra £120. Explained that I could take out a new policy with them for cheaper but they wouldn't budge. They said they would negotiate at renewal time, but not when I was changing vehicle. C**ts!

In the end I had to cancel my current policy, losing over half the premium to their 'admin' fees and went with someone else.
