Just went to remove my rear shock, rocker and ride height adjuster so that I can regrease them. I’ve done this before and it is pretty simple so I cracked off all the rocker link bolts first and took them out to release the top of the assembly. Removed the left hand footrest to get access to the sunken lower shaft bolt and undid it. Problem is, I can’t get it to slide out as there is insufficient space to grab the end of the bolt. I need to tap it out from the exhaust side but the bugger (57mm system) is in the way. Is there any way to get the bolt out without removing the exhaust? The bolt isn’t seized, it just needs a push/pull to get it moving.
iirc Richard you can't push the lower shock bolt out from the rhs of the bike as the tapped hole in the swing arm is a blind hole. I found that inserting a long Allan key into the Cap head bolt( once it has been loosened ) and slightly pushing down on the end of the Allan key whilst attempting to drag the cap head out backwards worked for me. I could of course got this completely wrong and am confusing the 749 with the 848!
John, I tried those tricks! Doesn’t work as it must need just a bit more force to move it. BTW The threaded end is a swing arm shaped “nut” that follows the curve of the arm.
If the bolt is replaceable, could you jam in an appropriate-sized torx bit in there and use it to pull it out? I haven't got my 999 handy to see if that is practical.
Ricky, take your Halfords trade card and get this for £3 http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/tools/hand-tools/rolson-3pc-magnetic-inspection-kit The magnet on a stick worked a treat on mine to get the bolt out and its telescopic very useful for getting stuff out from others places as well
Richard I assume that you are taking the weight of the rear shock off the bolts' shaft whilst you are attempting removal?
Thanks all. Don’t think a magnet will do it but will try. All weight of shock as it is disconnected at the top. Torx idea - would rather remove exhaust than knacker the bolt.
I held the shock in my left hand, lifting it slightly in an attempt to eliminate any weight being transferred to the bolt's shaft. Long Allan key in right hand, wriggling left/right whilst trying to jam the end of the key in the cap head by slightly holding at a slight angle. Hard to describe, but worked for me several times.

@CRYSTALJOHN is correct - you can't take the nut out through the arm and you need a long 8mm hex key to remove the bolt. Here is what the nut and bolt look like and the tool I use to remove the bolt - a 100mm long 8mm hex: Bolt is on the left, nut on the right, tool underneath. It helps to put a little sideways pressure on the tool to help it grip the hex hole in the bolt when trying to pull the bolt out. If the bolts is stiff is might be seized (due to lack of lubricant) or a little bent - in which case it will be more difficult - wiggling and pushing/pulling on the shock and/or ride height rod can help.
Thanks for the above advice - I was holding the shock to attempt to remove the weight whilst jiggling the bolt with my hex head socket key. I reckon that it needs access from rhs to allow me to gently tap out the bolt (after removing the special nut assembly, which is already loose but prevented from removal by proximity of exhaust).
Tricky though it might be Richard, it's a doddle compared with removing 848/1098/1198 shock which requires removal of rear wheel and silencers & exhaust pipes!
Recon I can change a shock over on 749 in 30 mins from start to finish. My 848 takes me minimum 6 hrs .
On the grey SA the "nut" for the bolt is the black bit that sits in the RHS. Remove that and it can be poked out, don't know if black SA is the same?
