Can someone advise on the pros and cons of the following Inner Clutch Hub set up which obviously replaces the "damped' standard item. Just wondered if its ok to use one or if the rubber damped standard item is really needed for drivetrain longevity etc? that's a really good question re: removing cush drive and I hope many others pick this up, particularly 'racers' and long term specialists. Much as i'd be tempted for a track bike I tend to think longevity of transmission would suffer and even result in the earlier failure of a component if used on a road bike and particularly if you frequently ride hard and are fierce on your gearchanging.
Lighter unit with less rotating mass etc, there are deals on ebay with new springs and retainer for not much more than a standard unit. Thats what appealed and as mine has wear and I am replacing the outer basket and plates thought it might be an option!!
Ah, I see. Cheers I suffered the wear you mention. The petal shaped thrust washer eats into the hub. If it does so excessively, the spring retainimg caps can rub on the inside of the outer cover. It was this that alerted me to the wear in the first place. The standard hub cost about £68 in 2008 but that didn't include springs or bolts etc....
Different engine, I know but our outfit clutch was similar and it made the clutch take up in the drive train very harsh and immediate......as Chris said, not so nice for road use. Chewed the plate lugs up quite quickly as well....might even have been the cause for cluch basket disintegration one time....that was fun, as I saw it come through the casing while my face was about two feet away. If too harsh, I suspect the possiblity of a shaft breaking is quite high. AL
This happened on my 916, I happened to have a spare (from the Monster) lying around so fitted it as a temporary measure. I then bought a billet hub for the Monster along with an ally basket for a huge weight reduction. But you could fit another 'petal' washer on top to take up the play from the wear...
Mine has worn so that there is a 'petal' shaped recess in the top of the hub. It actually looks as if it was made that way as the imprint is so perfect with the top of the washer sitting flush to the hub. I reckon another washer would make it fit perfectly but the next time I change it will be for a one-piece hub.
The solid hubs do make clutch take up quite harsh, especially if the dished plate isn't in the best of nick. Adding a second improves things a bit, but the clutch action remains akin to a slipper....more immediate and possible graunching on take up. As for the petal, the corrosion can be cut back or prevented with a smear of anti-seize between it and the drum. Copa slip or such like.
Yes I will, there is quite a weight saving along with less parts to go wrong and I'm not worried about harsh clutch bite. I've already got a billet hub for the (unfinished) Monster which I'll be using with an alloy basket and plates, see how that goes and I'll probably do the same to the 916 when the basket & plates are knackered as there is a huge weight saving by going all alloy but for now it's using standard hub & basket with sintered plates.
