The first time I noise tested at Oulton on my 1098 (full termi system) I passed, but everytime since they have failed me without baffles. The last time they told me I read 104db, yet everytime I do cadwell without baffles my reading is 102db. I have been told that ambient temp can play a part (presumably why I came in at 101db first time at oulton). My question is this, considering cadwell consistently tell me I read 102db, I am wondering (daft as it sounds) if I noise test with a blanket over engine and clutch basket may this just scrape me through under 102db at oulton? As a side note- I know to warm engine thoroughly and to pull in clutch as I go through. Cheers in advance!
Probably just instrument calibration issues and similar. If you baffle other points, e.g. Inlets, clutch, engine on your sound test it may strip some of the noise back (as you mention blanketing the engine).
Last time I was at Oulton, admittedly in '08, they measured a lot closer to the exhaust than most other tracks. Castle Combe was the same. Nowhere near the 1m the guidelines say, right up to the exhaust. The guy at Castle Combe was laughing at failing the Ducatis and was disappointed when mine scraped in! No testing at Eastern Creek
I had a nightmare at Oulton too. My zx6 track bike was measured at 106 initially with a standard exhaust with a baffled end can! Got the bike red hot and just scraped through on my 2nd attempt. Puts me off going back there to be honest as I managed a quiet day at Donnington with the same bike with no issues. My 999 with termi has never measured more than 102 at Cadwell with no baffle....
I'm not a fan of static noise testing, as if the tester is a complete tube and doesn't do it properly you'll fail. Plus there are too many inconsistencies. The ride-by system at donny and sliverstone is a lot better. Cadwell, Oulton are both MSV circuits which use ACU testing guidelines. However there is a lot that can affect the test, such as weather, surroundings, testing equipment. Just because you had a pass at one circuit doesn't mean that you are going to pass at another. To OP. I suspect if you turn up to a test with a blanket over the bike they'll fob you off. You're not going to ride with it on are you. And not to sound funny, but if you're failing without the baffles in then you know what to do!
The tester IS a complete tube at Oulton....they don't measure from the right distance, the right angle to the exhaust outlet and never make any allowance for bore x stroke to get the rev value correct to measure at or the ambient temperature. All noise levels should be measured according to the procedure in the ACU handbook and it's not simple. Add in the fact that Oulton often do their measuring at the entrance to the line up area and you get all the extra ambient noise added in. Of course the problem is that circuit owners can say "it's our circuit and we measure this way" but it's a bit crappy when it means you miss your trackday just because they have an unorthodox way of doing things. Last three Oulton track days I failed noise tests, 108, 106 and 112dB allegedly and yet I passed at all other tracks! I haven't track dayed at Oulton for four years as a result and it's my local track...
Ah yes but you did turn up on something that sounded like satan, but nothing a cut down can of fanta cannot fix, well for about 1/2 lap anyway
Oulton like Brands Hatch Gp circuit are close to peoples home's of which most of the folk don't like the circuits even if they were there a long time before the houses. As mentioned above the weather can affect the reading a fair bit and i have been with a Car which passed one day and failed the next at the same track, we found out when we had a look that the interior of the silencer had worked it's way loose after a day of bouncing over kerbs :-( When at Snetterton last October with a group of Friends 3 of them had the 1199 Panigale's and all failed the "static" sound test but they were allowed to travel round the track to see how they done on the drive by limit, all 3 of them were fine and were able to carry on with no worries at all. It is worth noting that Cadwell Park does not have a drive by limit as there are only sheep within 5 miles  and did i mention this great company have a track day there on Saturday 6th April Just for Italian Bikes .Italian bike track days - Introduction. Here is a extract from the T&C for track rental. Static Test Measurement MSV will carry out static noise tests on all vehicles using any MSV Venue(s) before allowing vehicles on-circuit. MSV may prohibit any vehicle that does not comply with the limits from participating in On-Circuit Activity. There are no tolerances allowed and MSV’s decision that a vehicle does not comply with the relevant limit shall be final. Measurements will be taken in the designated noise test area at each MSV Venue prior to allowing the relevant vehicles on track. A sticker will be issued for each successful noise test pass which will be checked by the pit lane marshal prior to that vehicle exiting the pit lane. To reduce delays, testing may continue whilst the sighting laps occur (provided these are ducks and drakes sighting laps behind an instructor at moderate speeds). This will allow time for Participants to take part in the controlled environment of these laps and then get their vehicles tested. Once the sighting laps have finished and the circuit opens fully then no vehicle will be allowed on circuit without first having passed the test and displaying a valid sticker. The Client must ensure that vehicles remain compliant with any noise restrictions for the duration of the event. If MSV is of the reasonable opinion that any vehicle does not comply with the applicable noise restrictions, the Client shall prevent such vehicle from participating in the remainder of the event unless and until the noise emissions are addressed to bring them within the applicable limits. If MSV is not able to carry out noise tests on a particular vehicle as described in this section, then MSV may prohibit such vehicle from participating in On-Circuit Activity. To enable MSV to carry out noise tests, vehicles must have a fully functional rev counter or have easily accessible (without the removal of fairings etc.) HT leads. MSV may carry out such further noise tests throughout the day as it considers appropriate, to ensure that vehicles remain compliant.
Bumping this thread. Anyone have experience of a Panigale at Oulton lately and how the noise testing went? Without baffles and with Termis the 1199s is pretty consistently 105Db static test and I have to be a little 'careful' with the throttle to make that sometimes. I've never had a problem with drive by even on 89Db static days when allowed to try that so wondering if its worth chancing the Panigale at Oulton? Edit - Just realised the limit for the two days we are there is 102Db so very unlikely a Pani day?
Panigale66 just said in another thread he was there this week and just scraped in at 102db but isn't going to bother going there again Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
