Went for a lovely ride today, when i got home thought i would lube the chain, did so and put the bike away.Went back to have a little fiddle with her about 30 mins later and noticed that i had used brake cleaner instead of chain lubricant!I did give the chain a good wipe with a cloth to try and take off the brake cleaner,i think alot of it had already evaporated, and then gave a liberal dosage of chain lube, and spun the wheel to try and fling off any remaining brake cleaner. So the question is will the brake cleaner damage the chain?Kind of feels like calling International rescue here.
They recommend not using wd40 on chains Brake cleaner = ya fukked I'm sure someone will be along with more useful comments soon
should be ok. The o-rings (rubber) might have been damaged, but maybe not. Keep an eye on them and if you can see that they're loose, replace the chain.
I think you'll be fine. Brake cleaner doesn't harm the piston seals in brake calipers so its probably ok with your O or X ring seals on the chain links. I've seen car mechanics use brake cleaner liberally on everything
It should be OK I would have thought as brake cleaner is safe to use on brake callipers which have seals in them made from a similar material to the O-rings in a chain. I'm not 100% sure though.:
I'd have no worries, chain lube has solvent in it to get it out of the can, which evaporates off like the cleaner would have. The only thing it can damage is the O-Rings that seal lube into the rollers. Keep and eye on them if you're worried but I wouldn't be.
as said above brake cleaner shouldnt damage the o rings or i am sure it would damage brake seals as well and have never had trouble using it and mechanics ( me ) use it allover the place lol
I use brake cleaner to clean my chain, have done so for years. Just give it a good rinse and lube afterwards.
