Jap bike questions

  1. My lad and forum member (Hatman) rides a Multistrada 620 restricted to 33BHP. Picked it up cheap of e-bay for just over £2000, with only 2500 miles on. He's doubled the miles now and it's been a good reliable bike (apart from a bit of damp in the clocks). Insurance was reasonable for an 18 year old. JHP fitted the restrictor plate and put it on the dyno to ensure it it only made 33 BHP.

  2. I almost forgot - yammy XT with Akros makes a great flame thrower and snowball mortar too!

  3. thank you all

at the end of the day its his shout so see what he thinks after looking at them 'in the flesh' so to speak on Thursday

reliability for next two years with high milage all weathers is going to be a priority and some re sale value  I can see him easily doing 10k plus a year

  4. I ran an older F650GS for a couple of years when the kids were smaller (i.e. still at school). It was a great commuter, was very economical & very reliable. It was good for carrying pillions & could also do some gentle 'green laning'. I never fitted proper off road tyres so I didn't try anything more adventurous.
Insurance was also cheap (for me - but I wasn't 17). Rode it in all weathers & it always cleaned up well, without any signs of corrosion. I really recommend the bike.

  5. insurance on the BMW is highest but still under £500.00 - bargain considering putting him on a beat up Pegeout 306 was £4k

  6. I don't know why more youngsters don't ride. They're so much cheaper to buy and run than a crappy old Clio/Ka/104/whatever. Guess they're not as hardy as we were...

Just another thought...Suzuki DRZ400, cracking bike.

  7. Fig, The getting a full licence to ride a bigger bike is a right royal pain in the arse nowadays.

  8. Compared to us old codgers, yes. But it's still only a 2-part jobbie to get on the road. I think it's confusion about the test rather than the test itself that puts people off, hopefully now the test criteria has been standardised the numbers will start to creep up again.

  9. 3 part if you take in the theory - expensive to

those from 'non biking' families are put off

there is nothing out their to encourage them

it may change - lets hope!

  10. What do you expect from someone who could turn water into wine? After all that work during the week he had a jar or two on Saturday night and was still Hung over.......

  11. On 7th day god made a Harley?
Well he had to do SOMETHING with all the spare parts bin!

  12. Hi Char, i had an ER6N for 3 years as my work hack, never missed a beat, sooooo easy to maintain, light - flickable yet very planted. Plenty of power even when restricted will carry two easilly in comfort. 55+ mpg, my son had the bike after me and i restricted it for him, even restricted it would pull 85mph easilly, more than enough to go with the flow. I can't praise this bike enough, bomb proof. They also hold their residual values quite well,we did 35000 miles when sold, when your son comes time to change or just remove the restrictors he will love it. I would certainly give this bike a close look, go for the 09 onwards model they made several changes to the frame and engine mounts to cut the vibes.

You only have to look at the IOM TT lightweight to see how well respected they are.
