Aprilia Rrv450 Gp

  1. Funny you say that. The engine that's in it (450) is built up by Ian Newton (IN Competition). They are built to race in the Thundersport series. He said they are good for about 60 hours before needing a rebuild. I spoke to him before buying my bike and asked about parts and also about the 550 engine, he said to avoid it, real problematic and for the extra 10 bhp its not worth it. I've not heard anything bad about the 450 engine and they been raced for quite a few years now, seem like a solid 4 stroke V-twin

  2. Ah - well thats nice to know....an sxv550 supermoto has always one of those itches id love to scratch, but, so im told, if you buy one theres an engine builder called "Cal" up North that rebuilds them....kind of the sxv master as it were and he uses a specific type of sealant so you know its been breathed on by him...apparently 10 times more reliable...if you buy one thats not....then you send it to him.

I can only gather that its one of those engines that needs to be "learnt" as it were. Apparently my old ktm 660 supermoto, if it needed a rebuild then the procedure and replacement parts needed to successfully strip and rebuild the engine the procedure is quite different from the original factory one...

  3. Cheers for that @comfysofa
Maybe the 550 engine might be a possibility
Lots of the parts are from SXV450, Aprilia RS125 and a few are custom made by Ian. Most of the parts are easily sourced but I might stockpile a few bits. Tempted with a set of fairing painted up in RS250 Chesterfield :)
First thing I need are tyre warmers.

The lap times on these things are pretty impressive. I'm just looking forward to having some fun :) I reckon it'll be a hoot
It's got a Mychron5 data analyser on it. Just reading about it now. GPS recorder, knows exactly what track the bike is on when you get there, records position on track and all sorts

  12. Looks like a great bit of kit Andy, and I'm sure it will be great fun on the track... As others have said, it would be cracking if you could get a daylight MOT on it too!

  14. Thomas Strudwick was lapping Cartagena in the 1:45s last week on a standard class Honda Moto3/Motostar 250 which weighs 84kg and puts out 47hp. Should give you something to aim for :upyeah:. Andy

  15. Reading that makes me feel so inadequate. I have been to Cartagena twice and not broken 1:50, but with a shitload more bhp. I want to learn how to get those lap-times. Is there anyone on Ducfor who has this knowledge and would be prepared to impart it?

  16. yes, use the plastic pistoned brembo master cylinder. before you know it you will be travelling faster than you ever imagined :upyeah:
