We had a gardener come and do some semi-skilled pruning a couple of weeks ago - he wanted £24.00 an hour!
And don't they trade on this 'I am so busy but I might do you a big favour and fit you in'.It will cost you though and I need to know straight away that you want me.
Trades get a raw deal, stigma of its only a manual job. No wonder the government are pushing apprenticeship s. Anyone look at how complicated systems are in buildings nowadays.
He had put his rate up from £17.00 per hour without saying anything. SWMBO refused to pay the new rate and just paid him according to the old one. Lessons learned all round I suspect.

Plumbing is an absolute doddle. As long as you avoid gas of course. But I do all my own. They charge exhorbitant rates. So I do it instead. I only employ a gas safe plumber for the gas stuff as in my view, the worst that can happen if I mess up a water pipe is a leak. On gas the worst is an explosion and possibly orbital velocity. So I pay for their PI, their experience and training in such matters.
