You haven't done closers or you haven't done a 999?? Essentially the same engine but frame differences of course...
An earlier Desmo valve setup mate. Snyder’s book shows design changes incorporated into later designs made improvements to accessibility but having not worked on an earlier model I can’t comment any further.
Boggy, did you say you bought the shim kit direct from mike at emsduc, or through a third party. Whats the current cost of kit inc delivery and import charges? I can’t put off doing it any longer! Cheers. Great pictures by the way.
Thanks. The shim kit off ebay from Mike at EMSDUC was £162. Delivery was £23 and import taxes (paid online prior to delivery) were about £34 I think. A lot I know but considering Mike does a free exchange on unused shims in the kit for sizes you may well need that aren’t there, on a return and re-send basis, where all you pay is for a measly pre-paid postage cost, it’s a great basis if you intend to do it again. In comparison, Ducati want around £14-£20 for a single closing shim and around £6-8 for an opening shim. With this route, my suggestion would be if you need a certain size of shim (after following the methodical shim size calculation table on the EMSDUC webpage) then get one size down plus one size up as well as the one you need (they come in 0.05mm increasing size steps). For mine, I used 4 new closers and 3 new openers but must’ve utilised about 10 shims out of the 34 provided in the kit during the clearance setting process before I’d sussed it. You also get a 10mm closing shim measuring tool as part of the kit which I’d recommend buying if you do go the Ducati or EMSDUC individual shim purchase route, plus a few half rings to ensure you can replace any broken ones. But don’t do what I did and buy 16 new half rings as I didn’t see any advantage when doing the clearances with old half rings or new. I fitted all the new ones in the end just because I’d bought them. Recommend a digital micrometer as well, with a zeroing, mm/inch button and hold facility. Godsend. If you need any help on the phone or just want to check anything, drop me a bell. My number is 07719714999. This is the advice Mike Guidera from EMSDUC sent to me via an email exchange. Top man: Hi Richard 7 mm closers go up to 4.35 mm 7 mm openers go up to 4.00 mm. If you are in a rush to trade unused shims for ones you need, email me a list of the ones you want, with a list of the ones you are sending, to me. Choose the type of shipping you want: 1st Class- $14.00- 3 weeks. Flat Rate $33.95- 10 to 14 days. I will send you a paypal invoice to pay for shipping. You put the shims in mail back to me, I will then ship the shims you need. My address: EMS 3052 Strand Road Rocklin, CA 95765 USA If you want to buy additional shims either let me know or purchase off the website, go to Individual Shims and Half Rings category. regards Mike. Like I said, top man, great service. Rich.
Cheers boggy (rich), some great info there and words of experience regarding the half rings. I’m going to order the kit and give it a go. Top man for the offer of help. Damien.
How you getting on Damien ? Mine’s all buttoned up and running again after tensioning new belts etc. Took some time. You done yet ?
Awesome post. I need to check thetvalves on my S4 as well, as it's the last thing that need checking since I got the bike. 2 days ago I dreamt I was revving really high ( no idea why ) and one valve got loose and came out flying out of the exhaust. I think Ducati Luxembourg did their usual job, which is insert fear in people's minds. They're experts on that. Still won't get my money for servicing. 83€/hour my ass! (No that's not my rate no PMs please)
