Starter Solenoid Inline Connector

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Derek, Mar 26, 2018.

  1. I'm fed up with the poor connection to the starter solenoid on my 907ie. It is the old style solenoid with the plug in connector that has a habit of falling out. Even with a cable tie round it doesn't always make a connection. The trouble is that the round socket terminals get enlarged and just don't grip the pins in the solenoid properly.
I'd like to fix this once and for all by replacing the solenoid with a spare 1098 one that I have and I'd like to replace the loom connector with one that matches the inline connector on the solenoid but have been unable to turn one up anywhere.
Does anyone know a source for this connector or even the make and type?

  2. hopefully someone will come up trumps - found and bought a few before but would have to search afresh now.

    Hitachi MS5A type solenoid

  3. Yes, that's the rubbish Hitachi solenoid that is currently fitted.

  4. I've not found a connector for the later type Derek. Had a couple go bad and cut out and fit a AMP type connector to the loom/solenoid. It's only the switch wires so no real load and the AMP's are pretty reliable

  5. If you haven't found them then I doubt if I will so I guess the AMP Superseal will be the way to go. I always keep a few of these so it will be no big deal to change them. Just seems a shame to cut off a perfectly good connector.

  6. In the past would have suggested you contact Harry at DG as I know the techs used to cut all the connectors of old looms just in case they needed one and I’m sure they had plenty of 1098 bits. Worth trying but no idea who to ask now.

  7. Thanks Geoff. I don't know who ask now either.

  8. I done this to my 888, Had the same bother as youself, spent ages trying to source the plug to mate to the tail on the 1098 one with no luck, I ended up replacing the one on the new solenoid and one one on loom with good quality superseal ones, Perfect now

  9. Some years ago Craig helped me out with a connector at DG. He had a box full of connectors cut from looms that had been replaced. Maybe try another dealership as surely other techs do the same.

  10. Thanks Geoff. Tried Kojaycat but no success there. I might give Craig a call if no joy I'll just change both halfs to AMP.

  11. Since the solenoid itself was ok but it's connector was source of the problem, I decided to solder wires directly to the pins in the connector and fit an AMP connector to the other end and fit the matching connector to the loom. It's working great now. The white goop is silicon I used to seal it.
