Hi.whats the general consensus on mixing tyre manufacturers on a 1200 mutly. I'm running T30 Bridgestone currently, rear is nearly shot but front is still good shape. I'm not into long distance or knee down riding just general weekend out and about stuff. Cheers
Some insurance underwriters consider fitting non original brand tyres as a modification and require notification. Urban legend also has it that having tyres of different manufacture is illegal. The only technical issue that springs to my mind is a different tread pattern will have different characteristics, so mixing tyres could affect how the bike handles. What’s wrong with getting another T30 ? It’s supposed to be a good tyre. Andy
Yep good point I don't know why I was thinking of changing makes as I've not had any problems with the T30. Cheers
I was ten years on Bridgestone technical, the guys are right to say keep the same tyres front and rear, it's not a legal thing unless you mix radial on the front with x-ply on the rear, but when it comes to matched sets it's all about the profile. The front and rear tyre profiles are designed to match so when you turn in to a corner both tyre work together, if you change one to another brand the profile will most likely be different and thus making the handling different, not necessarily for the worse but it's an expensive way to find out. Most of the customer complaints I dealt with at Bridgestone was Riders falling off because of not scrubbing in new tyres or poor handling after mis matching front and rear tyres. Remember, everyone is a tyre expert.
It’s black and round and the right size. If you’re not expect torrential rain (and slow a bit of it does) or trying to get to the edge of the tyre what’s the problem Bike may handle differently though, as pattern and profile isn’t matched.
I've ridden a couple of times temporarily on mixed tyres when front tyres haven't arrived or the wrong size has been sent. Never found it dangerous for general road riding but it never feels right either. Most recently I had an old Conti Trail Attack front on my KTM 1190 with a new Metzeler Roadtec 01 rear when Oponeo sent a 17" front Roadtrec instead of the 19" requested. Grip was OK but there was an obvious mismatch between rate of turn which felt odd. The bike didn't feel smooth. Far better to have a matched pair. Apart from anything else, tyres are expensive and short lived. Why would you want to blunt performance and waste mileage by riding around on a mismatched pair?
If you spent as much time as I have studying sidewall deflection graphs for all makes of M/C tyres you would see the huge difference between brands, then you would fit matching pairs. As I said, everyone is a tyre "expert"
Having different makes on front/back doesnt matter a shit, especially if you spend all of your time on the back wheel!!!!
Maybe. But does it really matter when in non lab conditions. Really? Am pretty sure most of india and china and indonesia and so on dont worry about matching tyres Personally, I wouldn't mismatch unless stranded
