From what I've read the whole street has had many burglaries probably linked to the same pond life. No sympathy here whatsoever.
A brave old man that decided he wasn't going to be a victim. You wont find many of those in Britain in the next 50 years.
Ok, maybe not overnight but stronger deterrents are definitely needed - the threat of a slap on the wrist doesn't stop anybody from going out and making easy money again.
I'm of the opinion, that if you are in my home, you are fair game. Asking you politely to leave is not on the agenda.
“The dead man’s next of kin have been informed.” So one would presume he did not have ID on him (who would when burgling) and he was therefore known to police (fingerprints on record or just a visual ID).

I believe it will. Infact it think that statement is utter madness. Once one is caught and he loses his hands surely others will think twice.
You said we shouldn't complain about thieves and thievery - why the hell not? I know the police numbers are heavily reduced, and the fine doesn't fit the crime. However, i still have absolutely no urge to go out an steal someone else's property.
I have yet to see a video of delinquents with angle grinders stealing motorbikes from the above places. Maybe i just haven't seen them.
