Only person I can feel sorry for is the old boy who defended himself and his property from two filthy little scrotes and is now banged up in a cell presumably wondering what sort of crap life has thrown at him. Hopefully the old bill will be treating him with the courtesy and consideration he is entitled to. I really hope that he won't be left feeling like a crimimal himself when the overwhelming majority of decent society are most probably going to regard him more as a hero and someone to look up to for standing up to and overcoming the lowlife which is slowly but surely starting to dominate everyones lives.
If what an earlier reply said was true; that the street he lives in has been a burglary hot-spot, he'll be a local hero. I imagine that the police and politicians are considering the response to this very carefully. As has happened previously with this sort of victim action being made an example of to dissuade others from defending your home/property in a way you think appropriate. Whilst this is something of a slippery slope it's too late as the public are feeling that they are not sufficiently protected. Additionally the perpetrators seem to think they practically have the right to take whatever they want, and do so violently if needs must, their chances of being caught, let alone charged and convicted are slimmer that they ever have been. Good luck to them making an example of an OAP, there'll be a public outcry if the facts as reported are true. Tony Martin was 55 when he shot and killed a burglar in his farmhouse, ISTR that he did 3 years in prison in the end, originally convicted for murder but reduced to manslaughter on appeal. His 5 year sentence reduced for good behaviour.
Coming from Africa, my general view in home invasion/self defence matters is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
Tony Martin hid and waited with an unlicenced shotgun, then shot at least one of the unarmed intruders in the back as he was running away thus killing him. That's why he was sent to jail. If he'd been woken up and used a legally owned shotgun he'd have most likely have been released without charge, or acquitted by a jury.
At the point when the police arrive on the scene of an incident, they do not yet know what happened, who did what to whom, or whose fault it was. If the first things they discover are a dead body, a man who says he killed the dead man, and a witness who only saw another man running away, it is best if they don't leap to conclusions. Neither the dead man and the one who ran off are able to tell their stories, there may be no eyewitnesses to what happened, and the account given by the man who admits the killing may or may not be accurate. The police should investigate the circumstances, gather evidence, and try to get to the bottom of whether any offence appears to have been committed. The Crown Prosecution Service should consider the facts and decide whether any prosecution should be brought. If so, a jury should decide whether any defendant is guilty. And if so, a judge should decide the appropriate sentence in accord with the law. In the meantime, keyboard warriors who know nothing about any of the facts seem to feel entitled to go onto social media and start leaping to conclusions, ranting about the death penalty, cutting off peoples' hands, etc etc. As per usual.
I just don't buy the whole 'harsher sentencing won't work' theory, in fact I think that's bollocks and this blind softness has ran it's course. Yes getting caught is still part of it, police numbers may or may not have something to do with that, although there still seems enough to sit in hidden lanes with speed guns generating cash, so perhaps it's about where their time is best spent and where they themselves feel they can get a result that sticks, as opposed to wasting their time on shit that doesn't put a stop to things. It must be infuriating being a policeman and knowing no matter what it's likely the criminals will be given ridiculous leniency and be out within weeks. Listening to an interview on Sky News this morning (which I'm desperately trying to find confirmation of statistics), whilst talking about the continued knife crime in the UK, i believe it was mentioned that the average sentence for being caught carrying a blade is still only in the 4 months. So even after loads of noise about tougher actions on knife crime years ago, even to this day any one can carry a knife around knowing that if they get caught they're not looking at any reasonable length of time behind bars. Net result, youths are not put off carrying knifes. Therefore knife crime increases in regularity, just as it has. Scooter crime, police not being able to make chase and that being made public knowledge. Net result scooter crime increases as it's an easy get out with very little in place to deter. We've got to stop pissing around.
You may be right but look at the USofA they send hundreds to prison for very long sentences and it doesn't reduce crime there
People have no problem putting enough money in the system, shame that the powers that be just can't spend it wisely, all out to line their own pockets
You should be allowed to defend your own home with any means possible, it should be sacred ground, being robbed in your own home is an horrific experience, so yes it's a shame he didn't do them both!
