Yep all sorted. Turns out the chap I spoke to at the aa last year didn't know his arse from his elbow as they do cover older bikes. Thanks to all and especially 58 for the help.
Don't forget your health card @chizel Not sure if it covers extreme hangovers? https://www.nhs.uk/nhsengland/healthcareabroad/ehic/pages/about-the-ehic.aspx
For information. I have breakdown cover as part of the service provided by my Nationwide Flexplus account which also includes travel insurance and mobile phone insurance. The breakdown covers anywhere in the UK and the EU in any vehicle driven by me or my wife (also on the account) with no restriction on age as long as the vehicle is legally on the road. ie. Tax, insurance and MOT where applicable. I've never had to use it but my son who has the same cover has and they were on the scene quite quickly. There is a £13 a month maintenance fee for the account which I think is well worth it.
Used same, get good reviews on MoneySavingExpert. Not had to use them but peace of mind etc. You need to read the small print, to make sure you don't need to front the money and then claim it back. When shopping for our policy this seemed quite common, this is one of those cases where I'd say don't buy on price alone. I have friends with old VWs who've been to EU events, broken down and had absolute hell getting their vehicles back and all manner of hoops to jump through. With something precious like your SS it's worth getting the right cover. Holiday Safe seem pretty good though.
