V4 What Prep Is Required For Gold Wheel Powdercoating

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Heedful, Apr 21, 2018.

  1. From research I've read, 'people' say you need to have them powder-coated by someone who 'knows bikes' as the bearings need to come out. Is this true? This is my first sports bike, so I've never removed a superbike wheel and have no idea whats under there (dragons?)

Would I need to take wheels off, tyres and brakes myself? Anyone know a place in the south east (east/west sussex)?

  2. Can’t your dealer sort it for you?

  3. The temperature required to bake the powder coat will melt the grease in the front wheel bearings so removing them is required. The oven temperature to dry wet paint is lower so does not so you could consider painting.
The places I have used for powder coating and painting will require loose wheels, no tyres and no discs. You will need front and rear paddock stands, 55mm (?) socket and a rattle gun for the rear wheel nut and you will need to remove the front calipers before you take the front wheel out. Front disc bolts are Torx bolts. All basic stuff - once you’ve done it before. Not used anyone close to you but can recommend Steve Turner of TPCS in Melksham http://tpcs-magnesium-refurbs.co.uk/ for powder coating and wet paint and he does wheels by post. Andy

  4. Good advice

  5. Thanks. That stacks up with what i've heard. Wheels by post would be very pricey though no?
I did speak to Steve re: the exhaust covers so maybe I'll give him another call.

I went in to the workshop of the dealer and it didn't fill me with confidence. (do they ever?)

  6. Depends on your dealer. I have confidence in mine :)

  7. there must be dozens of people who have used Steve at TPCS over the years ad you will be in safe hands re: preparation advice etc if you decide to use him. There are bound to be other refurbishers who you will be safe with if you persevere with searches and reading testimonials.
Cost? - you only need to think of the consequences of going to a less reputable place, one of which could be looking for a new pair of wheels.

  8. Thanks Guys. Oh I didn't mean cost for the work, I meant of physically posting them.

  9. First check the re-finisher offers a return to you postal service, some are drop off and pick up only

  10. I agree about Steve Turner. Excellent work. And Sussex to Wiltshire is surely not all that far to drive. If you spoke to Steve personally and let him show you his workshop and explain his processes to you, you would understand better and be more reassured.
